Flying in from Boston to Charlottesville and can't bring much gear. Must Haves??? First time to Lockn.
How hard is it to get to the festival/VIP Camping the first day. Lot's of traffic?
The VIP bathrooms... Do they keep them clean?

see the ultimate check list thread for equipment suggestions, although it is way beyond the essentials, but good information there.
Year One traffic in was a disaster. Year Two it was smooth sailing. And there's a separate route to get to the fest for VIP; they will provide info/maps later.
VIP bathrooms at Steeplechase area were clean during the day but were destroyed by hordes late night, and out of commission the following morning--and the problem is, no one to call about it. The shower stalls in the men's got really grody by late afternoon--slow drains, muddy floors--but tolerable; the ladies didn't use theirs much. I think the bathrooms down in the center area were better quality to begin with and were better attended, plus security kept the masses out of them. At Steeplechase the borders were porous at night.

Actually, CID has a concierge phone number. In 2013 our power went out. Called concierge and it was restored within 15 minutes. Someone had stumbled over shoreline and disconnected it, which tripped a breaker and everyone on our pop lost power.

Last year I did exactly what you did, except flying from west coast. Doing the same again this year. I try to keep my luggage to one checked bag and a carry on. I have a nice 2 person tent and down sleeping bag that fits inside my suitcase. Think backpacking lightweight gear. Last year my friends and I went to the store and bought all the stuff for cooking, a cooler for food and booze and some camping chairs and a shade tent. Gave them away to people the morning when we were packing up. This year, we're going with tent and sleep gear only and going to support the local merchants selling food. My girlfriend and I will probably buy an air mattress so we can get a decent night's sleep.
I have to say it is great having a rental car on your campsite to lock things up and jump into in case of lightning - like last year when we were all evacuated from the stage due to storms!
