I've spent a lot of time in Highland County and it is beautiful. More like Vermont/NH or New Zealand, north island from my experience. Until fairly recently it had no stoplights.Have you visited Highland County, Virginia's Little Switzerland?

Good comparison. There still is no stoplight, only a blinking light at the intersection of routes 220 & 250. I've spent a lot of time in Highland County and it is beautiful. BTW, for those who haven't heard, maple syrup is also produced here. My daughters won't eat any other.

I have a childhood friend who works with you, and he grew up in Roanoke. 
Ha! Roanoke is a wonderful city, as is the entire SWVA region. I looooooove it out there! An outdoor lovers dream!I can help with stuff down here in sw va (no, roanoke isnt sw va). 
One of my favorite places near lockn to sightsee is Appomattox. Something about those rolling hills gets me everytime.

If you have never been on the Blue Ridge Parkway I highly recommend coming early enough too take a drive and a day hike.
