Welcome to the Lockn' Forum - The home of the original Lockn' Music Festival family!
Barring a one-inch dumper, it generally won't turn to ankle-deep mud everywhere, but it will be red-clay mucky in some places. By Sunday the infield grass is about gone. The sod can get slippery after a rain in thin spots. Last year we had a lot of dust from the track. But it is a working farm with dirt roads and low spots that hold water, as well as a level track and field, so there will be muddy spots. And they get bigger as people walk around them. High traffic areas will be muddy at times. So dress for a farm. But it's after Labor Day so you won't be wearing white shoes anyway. Please note: This forum is in no way officially associated with Lockn' Festival or its promoters.
Planning for rain
Post by Flufhead on Sept 8, 2015 9:03:25 GMT -5
I'm getting there early enough that I should beat the storm on Thursday so I plan on taking my time setting up. I have a tarp for the ground and will fold over all the sides to prevent water from running underneath it. Can't stress this enough...make sure the tent is as spread out and tight to the ground as you can make it. I've also scotchguarded the seams and bringing my can with me to make sure I didn't miss any tricky places and to share it. I have a makeshift shade tent that's just cut out tarp tied/duct taped to two poles, but may wait till Friday to set that up.
I've dug a small trench around my tent to trap water and redirect it but I have just as many people telling me that's a stupid idea as much as it is wise.
I'm bringing a deck of cards and if there is down time, fully expect to make new friends over a game of Spades.
I'm bringing even more clothes now than I was before and even some cool weather stuff....good socks are a plus. I'll bring a small umbrella that can fit in a backpack and some cheap ponchos.
I don't think rain is going to be a major factor this weekend, but a little preparation goes a long way to making it a non or barely noticeable issue.
I'd certainly appreciate any other tips or tricks.

Not sure digging trenches will be welcome on someone else's horse farm, plus you have to get the entrenching tool past the weapons search. But great advice about looking for ways to divert surface water--and our terrain will have plenty of sheet drainage going on.
I go back and forth on breathable (eg Gortex) or solid rain gear, finding that in an all-day soaker with gear that isn't brand new, Gortex-type stuff is neither breathable nor waterproof. But the alternative is to wear a sauna.
Carry some kind of waterproof bag for your stuff you take to the show--wallet, phone, cash--because ultimately your clothes get wet. And even a small square of plastic sheeting to sit on, on the ground or a wet chair, can be a welcome bonus.
If it pours hard, use the run-off from your shade tent as a shower!

Rain gear - Frog Toggs
Rain boots - "Wellies"
As far as the plastic sheeting to sit on goes, I haven't quite figured that out yet - sure, the bottom protects you from mud/water/etc. on the ground, but how do you keep it from being its own drainage pool on the top side (i.e. catching the runoff from your rain jacket)?

Thinking about it, this would be a great weekend to make and test a "rain proof" version of this gadget:

The "slarp"? Or maybe the "snarpie"?
