2015 GA RV camping--storm made a mess
Post by johnnydollar on Sept 10, 2015 9:38:22 GMT -5
Those in GA RV that think they are going to be driving in Friday morning, I'd have a different plan lined up just in case. The new camping area is lower and people said it flooded out. Could be rumors, who knows. I walked some on the field and the Virginia Clay will turn to disaster after one vehicle drives over it. The staff parking lot is a disaster.
I'm planning no not being able to park in the GA RV section. I'll walk back and inspect first, but there is more rain scheduled throughout the weekend. RV + Grass + Rain = epic fail

I'd say about half of the GA RV spots up on the back hill that are brand new are unusable (still clay and no grass grown).
The RV spots down by the bowl stage are full as of 9am. Suprisingly nobody got stuck...and a huge prevost bus is parked there. They are cramped, and very hilly. Not a single level spot. I don't understand why lockn' spend all the money to install underground electricity on such hilly/cramped area. Oh well.

We are pretty sure we couldnt have been further away from the stages. We set up camp next to the Oak Tree. No power, no porto pottys, no water, no trash cans, no ice, etc....and one hell of a walk. Good thing for the $5/head Taxi rides, we used it a lot.
We took notice of generators being placed along the RV road with the hopes we are next on the list.
Later that day, I ran into Peter Shapiro near the Oak Tree with a small group of workers and Director of Ticketing. He told me they were surveying who still didnt have power and writing down RV GA Ticket numbers. We soon realized that they where determining who WOULD NOT be getting power.
After all was said and done, the worse issues was that we had to take our phones to the car to charge them rather than the RV; didnt need AC in the RV and had flashlights. We were smart enough tot bring a camp toilet, trash bags, Yeti's one with frozen food and one with a lot of ice (the frozen water bottles in the meat cooler were still 75% frozen when we got home today). It was cold as hell this AM when I woke in the RV.
Where we had challenges was the lack of fresh water and ice. Our less prepared neighbors needed the Porto Johns.
They came back with in a Golf Cart with bags of ice and came back later in a pickup and offered us Ice Cold Beer (it was bottled beer and we scolded him).
Net, net...Shapiro knew it was a major problem. He so badly wanted it to be worked out but there were no more generators available; they brought in some from CVille, Northern VA, and NC. If nascar wasn't happening in Richmond everyone would have had power.
I told him we understood he cant control the weather and if he could we would be first in line for any festival or concert he put on.
Once inside the venue, all those worries faded away.
A Shapiro high five and fist bump and he vanished and quickly as he appeared.

I did not realize that the they were installing permanent electrical hookups in this new location. Definitely should have graded this area to level before they did that. It is no fun to camp in an RV or a tent for that matter on spots that are not level. Yet another reason that I spring for VIP RV camping pass, level camping spots close to the venue.
