What did you listen to today?

On the new album theme...Vulfpeck's new album, The Beautiful Game, is a fun listen.

Joe Dart is one hell of a slap-happy-four-string player, and he destroys Dean Town and Daddy He Got a Tesla on the bass. 

I recognize they are a bit polarizing, but hard not to move to the songs Animal Spirits and Conscious Club. Yes, the banter that irritates some is present in parts of the album too. I liked the old-school feel of Fuge State & Thrill of the Arts that had a tinge more of R&B/Disco/Soul. This album swings much more funk, but in the lo-fi Vulfpeck way. Different, maybe not quite as good, but nice additions to their catalog. 

A gentle reminder to Lockn, they did only add 35 minutes of material....so they still cannot fill two slots without repeating multiple songs.  

Listening to some Dean Ween Group today.

Going to see them at Turner Hall in Milwaukee on Thursday with the Meat Puppets opening (which 1996 me is very excited about). 

One of the biggest barriers to happiness with life is expecting too much from it. That ones not mine.

I saw that first hand in my travels in Asia especially all the insanely happy people in the bowels of India and similar places. No one told them that life would be good.

Same with airplanes. It's absurd to think that huge hulk of metal can leave the ground. But everyone who gets on it thinks that it can; why else would they be there? And up it goes.

Heard Susan Tedeschi's version of "Keep those lamps trimmed and burning", a timeless tune that introduced me to Hot Tuna way back in the day.

Have skipped a couple Nahko and Medicine For the People shows locally to the disdain of some folks I share music interests with. I keep hearing them mentioned as a potential up and coming band that is a good Lockn' fit. 

Just spent the work morning listening to some live material (see below) and studio material (HOKA and On The Verge). Having trouble getting into them. Reminds me of a smash-up of DMB and Michael Franti. I don't dislike either DMB or Franti, but neither really holds my interest after a couple songs. After an admittedly modest couple hour effort, I guess I would call Nahko & Medicine "world music" that doesn't really excel in a musical aspect other than attempting a really ambitious mixing of styles that doesn't quite come together in my opinion. Hard to pin down. Pleasant to listen to as background with lots of positive messaging, but not something that I would be overly exciting to see.    

I dunno, having trouble getting into it and seeking out their shows after giving them a couple hours of time. Hate to judge a band before seeing them live.

According to Hunter this was the original fifth verse. I don't think I ever heard the Dead play this verse but have heard Ratdog play it many times.

Listened to Grateful Dead from 7/9/89. I was there but I don't know if I realized how good they were playing at the time.
