I am really enjoying the "Dear Jerry" CD. A few weak spots but overall very good. Phil Lesh and Communion Band is really good; I don't recognize the personnel, though. I wish the liner notes gave the personnel for each song, too. For example, Los Loboas' Bertha--they always do a good Bertha--is Bobby on guitar with Hildago? Inquiring minds want to know. For all the Wilco fans (read: both). Haven't watched the whole thing but jumping ahead I heard a lot of Ghost is Born including a full Spiders (Kidsmoke) in the encore. looks awesome. Edit: this is a great show. They are so tight right now and digging the new tunes live.

The Pretenders have a new album coming out and I’ve heard a couple of cuts from it on the radio; they sound good and like the Pretenders should sound. Chrissy Hinde teams up with Dan Auerbach (Black Keys) on guitar and in production. Keep an ear out for it.

Yes I know it from Robert Hunter. I think that David Nelson may have also sang it more recently. It makes perfect sense in place of the second "got a wife in Chino verse"

I re-watched (and listened!) to the Blues Brothers movie this weekend. It's been a while since I've seen it. The music is awesome; Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Cab Calloway, John Lee Hooker, James Brown, Chaka Khan. A little cameo by Joe Walsh. Fond memories.

I have written about them here before, but I predict a band named Madaila from Vermont will be moving up substantially in the the music scene many artists beloved on this board inhabit over the next 12 months. They played their first big jam festival this past summer (Mountain Jam), and just opened for Twiddle @ Brooklyn Bowl. The music does not have any traditional "Vermont Sound" thread that historically dominated the scene - Phish/RAQ/Strangefolk (Jam)....or Drowningman/Rough Francis/The Wards (Punk). Things have opened up in ou small but prolific scene and these guys are an interesting example of off-beat stuff that is getting good run. It is definitely Psych-Pop. Super synthy. Dripping with the ambition and promise contained in 80s music. Influenced by FLips more recently. That sexy pyrotechnic feel at times. If you only listened to studio cuts, you might find them starting off a bit too pop-derivative. Dance to them live and listen to them improvise and expand their songs, and you will probably not walk away thinking that at all. The songs actually have lyrics that tell some sort of story, all be it somewhat sophomoric because they are actually young in age (pursuing, pursuit of, and spited love; figuring stuff out).
Rolled out their new album entitled Traces last week. Just listed to it for the first time and continue to think these guys are going to get big. #1 - they actually construct albums where the songs have interplay and are put down in a way that they feed off each other. The songs "Nature", "Nurture", "What If", "Woods", and "Secret" are going to be great to see executed live. Just bought a ticket for New Years because I expect the show and the atmosphere they create to be a a freaking ball of a time.
To quote Todd Snider: "Our only goal is to get the people to dance, I always thought that was the deepest and most profound thing you can do." Madaila will make you dance. Variety is a the spice of life, try them.

One of the few movies from that era that has held up. Try watching Animal House, Caddyshack, et.al. they're just not that funny anymore. Blues Brothers, however, kicks ass. I re-watched (and listened!) to the Blues Brothers movie this weekend. It's been a while since I've seen it. Spent the morning driving to Upstate NY to bring my son on some college visits. We listened to Plavement, Dr. Dog, and St. Vincent. Some real good songs/sounds. Different than I am use to for sure. Great to see my son so excited to turn me on to music. At Bard College now, perhaps some Steely Dan on our way up to Saratoga.

Saw them play a song on the Jools show last night. Chrissy looks and sounds like before, retaining the new wave beat. However, the band did not; they were more like the mainstream rock bands of today, a toned-down mellow Americana sound--must be the Auerbach influence. It was nonetheless very good--but the only one doing the pogo was Chrissy.Sounds amazing.
