I suppose it was the inability to record them well but good live albums from back then were rare; often the song list was better than the recorded music. Now it seems the opposite, or that live and studio are at least equals. But Live at Leeds stands out as one of the superior live albums, superior because it captured a Who that was missing from the studio albums. Of course now we can drag up old live recordings, clean up the fidelity and have top quality. We have CD's and other digital methods to thank. One thing about the old live albums was that you found more long jams, extended versions and medley's than on the LP, so while the fidelity might not have been as good, the music might be more interesting. Big Something! New album coming out on 2/24/17. They just rlsd another song from the album. I'm diggin it. Gotta get these guys to Lockn. They are amazing live. They are poised to have a great year this year. Here's the link to listen to Song For Us
Man...if I just had the means to see them in Telluride for The Ride festival. Marcus King is playing too. I had the wonderful privilege to watch MK with TOO in Asheville for XMASJAM. Good show!
When we took the AS out W last year, we had Telluride on our hit list of must see places. We awoke that morning ready for the 3 hour road trip there, but they had received 10" of snow the night before. Kay didn't pack for snow, just cooler temps, and I wasn't about to be dragging the AS thru the narrow roads in Telluride under those conditions. Hence..Telluride is a bucket list item for me. What a drop dead gorgeous town.

Foo Fighters on Best of Austin City Limits (joined by Gary Clarke Jr) and then an hour of FF videos on MTV. I never knew them back in their day but like what I see now--straight ahead rock with a lot of textures and interesting, tight moves.
Grohl seems like an interesting guy despite the rock star ego.

Best thing that could have happened out of the Nirvana tragedy. Foo Fighters on Best of Austin City Limits (joined by Gary Clarke Jr) and then an hour of FF videos on MTV. I hope I'm not the only one on here who saw this performance last night. I caught Jimmy's opening monologue, but was just about to switch to Lawless Oceans, one of my newest favs on NatGeo. Jimmy mentions that the Lumineers would be on. Ruh Roh. Never seen em live, so what the heck? I think it's the guitar hook that gets me. I found this to be worthy of repeating. Hope you enjoy it...I sure did.

I LOVE the Lumineers! Their biggest "hit" was mine and Nick's first choice for our first dance, but the summer of their wedding they blew up big time on the radio and we felt it would be tacky.

I listen to and love a lot of different types of music. And I mostly love live versions of that music. I don't know if there is any live recording that captures the "LIVE" better than this. Play it loud. Play it to the very end where the amps are desperately trying to decide whether or not to blow up. Barely a minute into it is Entwhistle kills it. His bass rumbles with precision. So many peaks & valleys, tension & release, soft & hard, quiet & loud. Lovely delicate passages that they explode out of and then build into a frenzy to slip back into soothing (try 6:35 - 8:15 or 8:15 - 9:55 or 9:55 - 12:30). From 10:30 -12:30 is a 2 minute stretch of mayhem. Keith Moon is manic. Listen a couple times on headphones till you can really appreciate Entwhistle in the left channel. Phenomenal. 12:40 on is some of my favorite music ever. Raw power. This is what I crave blasting out of the speakers on stage.
Immediately follow it up with this.
Again, I am propelled by Entwhistles chugging bass. More noise than 4 people should be able to generate. Especially when you realize that one of them is strictly vocals and the occasional harp. Unreal.

Who's he playing with?
Interesting they are trotting out these jazz guys from back then now.
It seems that style came and went, and it's fun to play a 70's jazz cut for people in their twenties--they are blown away by the big ones like Birdland (Weather report) and will groove to the Crusaders, Brian Auger and of course Swiss Movement, although they are likely to have heard Compared to What sometime. And IIRC Tim Weissberg (flute) did a cool There is a Mountain, so it's fun to spin that for a young un who knows Mountain Jam.
Those are a different level than Di Meola, McLaughlin, Correa, etc. which take a studied ear if hearing for the first time.
yes I am one of those old dudes who traps youths for long sessions of Drop the Needle. But a Scotch tasting on the side keeps them around.

Thumbs up just isn't enough for this. Thanks Jeff. It's been about 25 years since I've seen AlHis first solo album while he was still with Return to Forever and just 22 years old.

I just realized that there is a WTF thread and that makes it weird as to where to post this. Anywho, the WTF podcast has an interview with Ryan Adams I highly recommend. Some cool stories about him and the Stones and playing Wharf Rat with Phil. Apparently Phil got to know him because of the Cold Roses album, which I have always felt has a lot of dead in it.
