Mount Solon is known most for Natural Chimneys Regional Park, which is owned by Augusta County and represents a favorite regional recreation space. The name originates from the seven towering rock formations located inside of the park, the tallest of which is 120 feet. These limestone formations seem like chimneys from a certain viewpoint. Besides the Olympic-sized swimming pool at Natural Chimneys, there are also numerous campground sites throughout the park. On the third Saturday in August every year, a jousting tournament is held at Natural Chimneys. This is the oldest continually held sporting event in the United States. Due to the importance of this equestrian tournament, the National Jousting Hall of Fame is located at Natural Chimneys.

I am a huge Yarn fan. The Black Lillies are also really, really good. I enjoy Steep Canyon Rangers (most famous for playing w/ STeve Martin).
All that said, I don't think a lot of those bands are up my alley. And price-wise, I agree it is overpriced for what you get. I've got some Yarn friends who go to it and they have a good time.
I'm personally going to try to exchange some work for a day pass. I know a couple of people who vend there.

There are many factors that make this festival special aside from bringing in a quality lineup of diverse acts each year.
Natural Chimney's is a full service campground on wonderfully maintained grounds. Because acts don't overlap the two stages on the music meadow are fairly close to one another making movement between them very easy. They do not oversell this festival so it never seems crowded and you can move from the front of one stage to the other an less than 5 minutes. As mentioned above the 'chimneys' are pretty stunning especially at night when lit up.
The campground staff, festival organizers and volunteers are very friendly and helpful. This is a hassle free zone where there is a strong sense of community. Folks are there to enjoy the music and each other. Plenty of partying going on though not to wookfest or frat party levels.
I actually find it to be a decent value for four days of camping and 3 days of quality music especially if you are lucky enough to get early bird tickets and premium RV (power & water) passes, which both sell out in a matter of minutes each year.
You can look at the previous years lineup on their website to get an idea of what to expect.
Roosterwalk is another smaller Virginia festival work checking out that offers some more high energy acts then Redwing. roosterwalk.com
