Welcome to the Lockn' Forum - The home of the original Lockn' Music Festival family!
You should be offended. Sounds like it could be a mistake? Were the fees disclosed anywhere? I wonder if it would be worth a call to them? One thing that galls me about the BS fees is how they compound them when you buy multiple tickets. I could swallow, barely, one transaction or shipping fee per order, if it were reasonable, but not per ticket when they are put in the same envelope or processed at the same time! And where there is no option to avoid the BS charges, I'd rather they just jack up the whole ticket price and not tell me. You should be offended. Sounds like it could be a mistake? And I agreed with your "sticker shock." Also I am mindful, as I have said before, that my "family unit" is only one ticket, and only one mouth to feed and water; the cost factor for multiples, even just two people, becomes significant real fast. Best example of that is that I doubt I'd do VIP if I were buying more than one. Please note: This forum is in no way officially associated with Lockn' Festival or its promoters.

Understood. Along with the $100 increase in VIP tickets and the $50 increase in tier 1 GA tickets.
Let's remember, this is the same promoter who made the decision to increase the price of 300 level Dead 50 tickets at Soldier Field AFTER the mail order through GDTS TOO had already occurred. On one hand, Shapiro can make things happen in terms of bookings that no one else does, but on the other hand the business practices leave a little to be desired. I have been aware of this since last year.
However, if Lockn' delivers additional acts that justify the price increase, and delivers infrastructure that makes the festival experience more comfortable (let's hope the date change matters in that regard), I'll be OK with it. I bought tix at the current price level anticipating that this would be the case - and the understanding that tix will increase in price again when those additional artists are revealed. If OTOH the additional artists fall a little flat, I'll sell the tix and put my money somewhere else. I do believe that at least in terms of lineup, the end product will deliver.

OUCH.
Tickets Today (who does Lockn' tickets) is actually one of the more reasonable ticket vendors on service charges in the grand scheme of things. Wanna see high fees, Ticketmaster is the king on that - although Front Gate is getting up there too.
I wholeheartedly agree that the smaller fests are where it's at. I plan to do SCI's Hulaween fest at Suwannee in Florida in October - last year tix started at around $200 for the four days, $399 for VIP, and $499 VIP with six catered meals.
The bigger fests are usually something I avoid these days, because to get any viewing beyond far back GA, and having physical issues that require absolute performance on ADA issues, I just can't take the chance on things failing. VIP at these large fests are priced out of my league now.....to think of what I got out of VIP at Rothbury for $550 vs. what it costs to do big fests like Bonnaroo now, I can't justify the VIP rates, and can't trust that the GA ADA will be reliable.
I view this fest as a potential anomaly - the reserved ADA camp spaces are a HUGE reason I am taking a chance on this, along with the lineup which has the potential to become a Super Bowl of jam music. Add Dead projects plus SCI plus some good cross pollination it really has "don't miss" potential.

*Edit to include some outrage*
Now here is something to be outraged by. You can buy a $299 GA ticket and get a payment plan on that ticket. I buy a $799 VIP ticket and there is no payment plan (I know it is CID) but if I buy a Wintergreen travel package CID has a payment plan on those packages. Nor are there payment plans on my $700 RV pass. I know, first world problems.
Still not really outraged.

Item Total: $299.00

In the big picture that doesn't seem all that unreasonable to me.

A $2.50 delivery fee is OK; a $10 service fee is absurd but that's the market. I probably paid a $1 service fee on my $8 CSNY ticket in 1974; multiply each by 10 for today's market.
The alumni discount has never been a factor for me b/c I can't commit and spend that far in advance, although I am always looking for a bargain. Wonder if I can get alumni discount next year if I don't go this year? But especially with the price increase, the discounts are much more valuable this year.
As for price increases, no one likes them but the cost of the overall adventure, if you like the line-up, is still in line, as is, equally, deciding the increase takes it out of one's range.

It also allows more margin for error if the fest doesn't sell optimally. As long as this doesn't become a loser on the balance sheet year over year, it can stay alive for future years. At some point the gig has to turn a profit, or it won't stay viable.
Another point to consider, using a fest like Bonnaroo as an example, is that Bonnaroo draws 80,000 people. If this fest draws 35-40K, the ticket price has to be sufficient to pay all expenses with less people buying in. Signing big name talent isn't cheap. I guess the question is - would we rather have this fest set up for 60-80K and pay less money, or would we rather pay a percentage more and have the fest be a little more accessible?
....and if we want to see the best, most talent rich lineups, we're going to have to expect to pay for that. In this case, we can only judge whether or not it's worth it when the full lineup is known.
It is almost always assumed that a new fest will take a few years to be profitable, and then once "on the map" the fest gets name recognition and hopefully becomes successful. As it becomes successful, the prices are increased in order to turn a profit, but hopefully along with that comes bands worth the ticket price.

I keep seeing that the festival hasn't made a profit being repeated. I don't know much about festival logistics, but I know enough about the history and realities of the music industry that I do not believe for one second that promoters and executives public statements about profitability. I take all of them with a grain of salt.
I am fine w/ the price (our camping went up, but since we bought Alumni this year, our ticket prices went down). Being local we basically have zero transportation cost and very little time cost, so that is significant to us when comparing to other festivals.
We look at Lockn as our family vacation. When I compare it to other things we could do for our family vacation, such as spending a week at the Beach, or a week camping in the mountains, for the money and the entertainment we get Lockn is quite a value for us.
That doesn't mean we are immune to price pressure. We could afford quite a bit more (we could do VIP, but choose not to). We could and certainly would, at some price, look at other festivals and compare what they offer. I would wait until at least after the full lineup is released and likely until after the festival to assess that.

However, I am comfortable with my information about lack of profitability so far, but will not go into it. But one aspect is that those in the business usually have many ventures. For example, a guy might manage a band that appears, and invest in the fest, and not make any money on the fest invest, but make money on the management side. An investor might also own some or all of the ticket company, CID, the band buses, and concessions in addition to fan-based merch.
but I don't see how any of that matters, being a capitalist and all.
