Grammy-winning singer-songwriter and Williamsburg resident Bruce Hornsby has rounded up some of his old friends and collaborators for a three-day music festival in June on the lawn of the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg.
Ticket presale, available here, begins at 10 a.m. today and will run until 10 p.m. Thursday. Public ticket sales begin at 10 a.m. Friday here.
Here is the lineup of the June 24-26 event, dubbed Funhouse Fest after a 1998 song of Hornsby’s:
•Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers
•Ricky Skaggs & Bruce Hornsby
•With Kentucky Thunder
•Shawn Colvin and Steve Earle, performing together as Colvin & Earle
•The Taj Mahal Trio
•Greensky Bluegrass
•Railroad Earth
•Jack DeJohnette
•Featuring Ravi Coltrane and Matt Garrison
•Aoife O’Donovan
•ChessBoxer
Many of the artists have played with or opened for Hornsby over his 30-plus-year career. He is a co-presenter of the event, along with the Virginia Arts Festival, and will perform each day.
“We’re pleased to be able to offer this lineup of great artists from across a broad spectrum of American music, for the most part a group of old friends and musical cohorts from the thirty years since the release of our first record,” Hornsby said in a release announcing the lineup. “And we’re also happy to be able to present it in my hometown — hell, I can walk to the gig every day!”
Hornsby, who is one of the investors in Southside Daily’s parent company, Local Voice, said he had mulled the festival idea for a few years and initially thought about doing it in Asheville, N.C., “one of our favorite places to play.”
But he never carried through with the idea until he was prodded by Rob Cross, the executive director of the Virginia Arts Festival, he said.
The Virginia Arts Festival has presented a weekend-long mini-festival of performances in Williamsburg in each of its 20 seasons. Funhouse Fest represents the first curated, themed three-day music festival.
The Friday entertainment will feature Ricky Skaggs and Bruce Hornsby with Kentucky Thunder. Saturday performances will begin at 4 p.m. and include sessions by singer-songwriters Shawn Colvin and Steve Earle playing together. The night will end with Hornsby joining The Noisemakers to perform their upcoming album, “Rehab Reunion,” to be released June 17, and the album that won Hornsby’s first Grammy, “The Way It Is,” in their entirety.
The Sunday performances will begin at 3 p.m. with ChessBoxer. Also scheduled that day are singer Aoife O’Donovan, blues legends The Taj Mahal Trio, and Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers.
The festival will begin with a solo performance by Hornsby on Thursday, June 23, at William & Mary’s Phi Beta Kappa Memorial Hall, with proceeds benefiting Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg, Virginia Shakespeare Festival and Virginia Arts Festival’s educational outreach program. Tickets are available for $25 to $35 with purchase of three-day festival pass.
