also, I was just reading an interview in Garden and Gus with him and Sturgill Simpson. The quote from Merle was something like, "I'll keep on touring -- if I don't die or something...."

Pretty wild it's also his birthday. Sneake feel free to move this thread to off topic/ music. Had one of my many senior moments when posting today.
Merle was definitely a big influence on the Dead, I'd say Bobby in particular.

The Dead playing songs by people like Haggard, Robbins and Cash show that it was truly an Americana band--as well as other genres.

Good ole Merle Haggard. Such a trusty Alias.... One time after an ABB concert at Saratoga nearly 10 years ago, I got a funny call from my dad, who naturally is a casual Merle haggard fan. So I had borrowed his big suburban truck cause we where packin 6 deep for the 3 hour drive. We decide to pull off I90 and catch some rest at a dingy highway side motel where I, naturally signed in as Merle haggard. Well the guy must have recorded our plates and Gone back and gotten the contact info from the dmv, because sure enough my dad calls me up and sais "Matthew, would you have anything to do with why I'm getting a call at home asking for country legend Merle Haggard?"

Course we didn't come close to trashing the hotel room so I can only assume the guy thought Merle may have actually been in the picture haha!
