Welcome to the Lockn' Forum - The home of the original Lockn' Music Festival family!
I like it, I never bought into the Dead / Phish debate... Always have been two separate bands to me.. I never had a chance to see Phish live so all the sets will be great.. Ween should be cool too, apparently there was a Ween / Phish thing pitting phans and fans alike into a debate, still doesn't phase me... I am a lover of music many different kinds & a student of sound (IAR class of 00') so I say bring it on... We'll all have a real good time.. The day break between will give it a nice spin, maybe a chance for some of the LOCKN mash ups & sit ins I have heard so much about... This is my first LOCKN so I am really excited to experience the family, music, & fun.. I think if they squeezed a whole lotta Phish into the middle or bookended one half of the fest or the other it might feel lopsided to the not so Phanatical crowd.. I am really looking forward to see how the dynamic plays out... See you there #bekind... Please note: This forum is in no way officially associated with Lockn' Festival or its promoters.

Probably my favorite song, if you want classic phish peak this is your bet. Be warned, minimal lyrics, slow build up, amazing finish.

- tried to include a mix of live / studio versions and from recent shows but please add on to my list with whatever are your favorites.
I think people didn't like Hoist and stuff like "Prince Caspian" because they got away from the musical acrobatics and into actual "songwriting." That acrobatic stuff (YEM, Divided Sky, Reba etc) is orchestrated to a nicety however, and doesn't always leave room for improvisation. I'm no great musician, but it's my understanding that it's easiest to solo over a two-chord vamp. You know why "Estimated Prophet" shows up on almost every Dead second set since it was written? Because it's one of the few Bobby originals that's infinitely jam-able. Phish seem to have opened some of the song-y stuff up quite well.
I, too, had a problem with the lyrics: they usually don't give me feels like Hunter's or Barlow's do. I'm hearing a lot here that moves me, though. Good thing: I mostly come to these things to be able to feel something other than anger, fear, or existential dread for a change.

Started with 'A Live One' which is an album of songs from their 1994 tour. I chose to start with the earlier stuff and work my way up to the newer. The album worked for me and as i found more songs I liked, i dug deeper and started going to shows.
I consumed a LOT of Phish before my first show and listened to Gone Phishing on Sirius Jam On religiosly (one set of a Phish show every weeknight) to get ready.
I have been with Phish since then and still have plenty to learn.
Everyone is different in how they explore new music, but thought i would share a little for my early path.

Slip Stitch & Pass was my first and after that I just stole my brother's cds. Listened to them constantly in my car and had to make the conscious decision to mix in my other favorites. Finally got to see them at Knoxville in 2009.

Yes, Spotify has a shitload of their live releases. They do not have the Riverport show itself but the Gin is a filler on one of the shows. Just search it.

Is it more that Trey just likes Ween so phans like them too or is it that they actually have something in common musically?

I was and still am always naturally way more into the Southern Rock Branch of the Jam Tree once outside of the trunk of that tree (Dead>Allman Brothers>Widespread Panic>Black Crowes>Haynes/Mule>Tedeschi Trucks>>>>)
Was not naturally inclined to like Phish's whimsy and didn't always understand their jams, I guess you'd say. Frankly, avoided them.
When I saw my first live show (Greensboro 2003, with my arm being twisted) that all changed in terms of liking the music. I bought in full tilt after live Phish. But it was bad timing to try to get into them, I guess. Coventry was just an epic shit show (saw with my own eyes) on a human and musical level that represented a crash that seemed to be needed. The band and fan base seemed like they needed some time to take a deep breath. The Coventry music was not really very good and the scene wasn't either - and don't try to only blame the mud. Left a bad taste. Not passing judgement, but seemed like Trey really needed to get clean from a personal and musical standpoint.
Post return, kinda hesitated to get too excited about them. But around 2011-2012, started making a concerted effort to get back into it, and thought Fuego was a really solid album. Opened up listening to their full catalog of shows going back to the beginning, and catching some live shows. It's been a ton of fun, and I think they are reaching this amazingly balanced point of their careers. What was before was prolific but not sustainable (90s-early 2000s), but I think what they are doing right now is pretty awesome. Sounding great live, although have not seen them on this tour. Still bringing new and great stuff to the catalog too. Looking forward to the new album and material. Having them at Lockn' is kinda cathartic. Very psyched to see Phish where they are, and think Lockn' will be a great fit for them right now. Fear not worried folks, it'll be fun.

I only got into Ween over the past year or so, but a lot of times I like that Ween, like Phish, doesn't seem to take themselves all that seriously. Sometimes you just want to hear a song about spinal meningitis and little else.

Nice! I started listening in '94, but did not catch them live until '98. I have about half your number of shows under my belt, though.
While I share your feelings regarding a non-Phish festival, I feel like this one is set up differently in that Lockn' seems to be very collaboration friendly. I also think you have more of the same kind of 'fan' for lack of a better term than you would at a fest that also features EDM and metal so they might be more likely to just do their thing in front of "their people". Or maybe I'm just trying to convince myself of that haha.
For those who haven't seen them for awhile, 2015 was a great year for Phish. They were really locked in. While this year's tour has been a little 'song-y' and there have been some odd song placements (particularly in the second set), the last two shows have been sick. I have high hopes for Lockn'.

Not quite that long for me. I think my last show was 1996. Philadelphia. Whatever they were calling where the Sixers play then.

It's two comedian friends, one a fan (Harris Wittels of Parks and Rec fame, who later passed, RIP) and a not-fan, Scott Auckerman, from Comedy Bang Bang. Harris basically spends each episode trying to explain Phish, their appeal, and by the end get Scott to become a fan. And it is HILARIOUS! My husband and I are actually going to be listening to it again on our way to Lockn'.
So if you have long commutes, work in the garden, go for walks, download the podcast and give at least the first episode a try. You won't regret it.
