Rome Day 2
Sleep in late. That is until the lovely church dome that we can see from the terrace starts chiming at 8 am. Lovely but I had planned on a later start date. We managed to laze around and have some breakfast and be slow today. Strawberries, bread, butter, prosciutto, and rambol walnut cheese with Skipper Frutti di Bosco Light (black currant, blueberry, blackberry and grape juice). The cheese is French but I ate Italian prosciutto in Paris so all’s fair. First stop was Bar Rosanna for a caffe. I walked in and the owner remembered me… I know. But she remembered what I was having for my first drink. Oh yeah, I will be going there every morning. We hustled and got to the Pantheon around 11:30 for the big noon illumination. Nothing. Daylight savings time means even the best laid plans of Hadrian get put on pause for an hour. Today is Rome's birthday and that is why Hadrian had the Pantheon built this way. We decided to wander for an hour and try it again. Pam pointed out L'Antica Salumeria and asked if I wanted to go in. They gave me a sample of porchetta. That’s how pushers usually do it. The first taste is free. All pork product will now be judged by this. The skin was salty and crispy and… oooooohhhhh so good. They made beautiful platters that looked like they were made for a family of four and in fact they were serving to a family of four. I was tempted but had finished breakfast so I only got a sandwich. Pam went with the cannoli. It was just slabs and chunks of pork on bread. I hated to throw half the bread away but I just couldn’t finish it. It was soaked in the essence of the beast whose head was still in the counter. I somehow stumbled out of that den of pork and we went to see another church, Chiesa di Santa Maria Maddalena. More crazy ceilings and a dome with doves in the very top. We wandered for a few more before heading back to the Pantheon where a guy was playing Led Zepplin on cello. The crowd wasn’t as severe as I had anticipated and we hung until the light streamed thru the oculus in the ceiling and illuminated the doorway. Pretty cool. An espresso later and we were off to do a tour. This will be our first tour ever and so we picked a unique one. It was researched and led by Massimo from StoryTellingRome called the Scarlet Ladies Tour. AWESOME. A tour that highlighted the stories of 7 courtesans and prostitutes of Rome from the 15th thru 17th century. It was fascinating and extremely well planned and presented. Houses that these powerful women (the courtesans) owned, the tragic story of street women and the double standards, the powerful families that resulted from these liaisons and the churches that they built and were buried in. There were only four of us on the tour and two had been given it as a present and bailed early. Right after the coins depicting the first eroticism in western art I made a Santa Claus self reference “ I bet you didn’t expect to hear dirty stories with Santa Claus today did you?” they bailed. I think he enjoyed Pam and I as much as we enjoyed him. He is who we have a private tour of the Borghese Gallery with him in a few days. His partner is showing us Ostia Antica in the morning. Seriously, ask me about this it was very very cool. Home for a glass of wine, Le Contadine Piu Sprese e Croccanti (Italian potato chips) and some Phishes from Vermont. I got Pam a bottle of Falerio Pecorino, Dinner tonight was around the corner at Open Baladin. Yes a beer bar that serves burgers. WSe started with some hose made Paprika potato chips with a smoky thick “ketchup” Then Pam had an awesome eggplant based veggie burger with Buffala Mozzarella and I had a rare burger with house made mayo, arugula, grilled eggplant, roasted red peppers, swiss cheese and house cured bacon on an intensely coated poppy seed bun. Who goes to Italy, or anywhere for that matter, and gets a burger? Us and so far it has paid dividends. Oh yeah I had to wash that down with a Cantillon 1 year old (Jeune) Lambic. On tap. I took Pam home for a shower in the ENORMOUS claw foot tub and I went out to find new friends. First I went to Johnny’s Off License. Beers with the owner and friends. I do not understand Italian but I do understand beer. Italian beer? It is so much better than you imagine. Cavorting in the street just off of Campo de Fiori. Back to the apartment… no I wanted to go to Open Baladin again and I’m glad I did. Got the last Birrificio di Lambrate Grateful Deaf. Kicked the keg and my job is done. Time to go home.
