Welcome to the Lockn' Forum - The home of the original Lockn' Music Festival family!
I'd say that is a very prudent decision. My wife and I have been having similar conversations recently. Right now our kids are still young and traveling with them even short distances is somewhat arduous. So we are currently on the separate vacation plan, with me doing festivals solo and her doing cruises and what not with her friends. But in the next couple of years our kids will be at a better age and likely more appreciative of seeing more of the world. So we've built up a pretty extensive list of places we want to see. Of course our travels will still be centered around places of musical significance, with Vienna pretty much topping the list. I'll still catch shows as often as possible but they'll have to be local. If Phish, Mule, Umphrey's, String Cheese and (God willing) Widespread Panic want my money, they're gonna have to come to me. My first trip to Italy was a short stop after 7 months hard travel in southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent '80-81. All I did was eat; thought I'd died and gone to heaven. Subsequent trips are all about the food and wine; the other points of interest follow. I especially love the mandatory lunch wine with local bread/meat/cheese. To sit in a park with a $40 Brunello you bought for $5 in the grocery store just feels delightfully wicked. And truffle oil in everything. Love finding cool liqueurs (aperitif/digestif), too. Once found one made out of myrtle leaves/berries (Mirto) that was like a drink of the East Coast salt marsh. And let me plug Umbria (Perugia) for the chocolate.... Chris, a great souvenir are the small bags of mixed spices for your pasta you can find in any Saturday street market--inexpensive, light weight, duty free, last a long time at home and each time you cook with them, you travel back. From those I learned the technique of cooking the dried spices in my olive oil first, rather than adding them later. So jealous.... Please note: This forum is in no way officially associated with Lockn' Festival or its promoters.
Next question: Anyone ever been to...

I think we may be ending our big money festival and music vacations. Instead of spending thousands of dollars every year to see mostly bands we've seen before I think we are going to spend that money on seeing places, peoples & cultures we've never seen before. For the next 5 years anyways. So this will in all likelihood be our last Lockn. And DeadCo Alpine Valley will be our last big weekend run that we have to fly and pay for hotels etc. We'll still do driveable weekend runs where we can crash with friends and small cheap festivals but that is it.
So seriously who has my inside dope on Italy? Rome, Amalfi Coast, Pompeii, Capri, Naples, Tuscany hill town farms, Siena, Florence, Venice, Pisa, Cinque Terre, Campania, Milan, Lake Como/Garda...?
What happens if I take both?

Everything is close-by making it easy to hit several sites in one trip. Rome is central; it is also a big city which is +/-. But north of Rome, Florence in the center, several great small regions within easy access of each other--you can zig-zag or drive an arc from one sea to the other. Rent a car for everywhere except Rome and Venice.
Here's the thing: you can stay a long time in one place and love it; you can move from place to place and love them all. I personally like the strategy of not moving every day, but every 3-4--but each time you move you are sad to leave!
The only mistake IMO is to do a "scavenger hunt" to hit all the attractions. Skip a bunch; they have been there a long time and aren't going any where. For me, I get more out of soaking up atmosphere than seeing something that looks just like the pictures in a coffee table book. Pick one theme: modern, Renaissance or ancient.
I think Spain would be a similar experience; haven't been. From my own experience Italy is a better trip than Germany, Baltic Russia, England, Greece and Yugo, and from those experiences I think I can extrapolate Benelux, Austria-Hungary and other Europe. Scandinavia seems to my limited experience to be not as easy to bop around place to place due to logistics. Thus I rate Italy so highly.
Thanks for the opportunity for a diversion!

That is what we are looking at smosey. The initial plan is to be in Rome for 5 days with a day trip to Pompeii/Naples. Then rent a car for a drive up into Tuscany and stay at some farm somewhere for a couple days, like 5, with maybe some day trips by car to surrounding towns like Siena and Assisi or not and then a couple days in maybe Florence. Take about 2 weeks to do it. Put Rome up front with all the big attractions and a fairly intense pace then cool out not stress too hard after that. See what we see, do what we do.
Any specifics that fit into that scheme would be welcome.
I think a 3 week Spain/Portugal/Andorra/Basque Country driving trip is 2018.

As long as you DIY, plan ahead and embrace austerity, you can travel Italy for about as much, maybe less, than driving around the Midwest. But the wine is better.

What I mean is, looking for ways to cut expenses that don't really add to the travel experience. Like camping instead of glamping.
Cool thing about Italy (outside the city) is that you can stay in 15th century buildings in a medieval walled hill town with 3'thick stone walls and wooden shutters, cheap--a real walk back in time. But from here in the USA, you will see travel promotions to stay in places like that, as if it's a rare once-in-a-lifetime experience, if you book it now for 10x what it costs if you book it there.

Here is our place in Rome. It's located on Piazza del Monte di Pieta. It's right around the corner from Roscioli (renowned deli/restaurant/cafe/pasticceria/wine/salumeria/wine bar) and Open Baladin (over 100 Italian bottled beers and 40 on tap)
View from our rooftop terrace. The dome is Chiesa di San Carlo ai Catinari.
The entry palazzo.
The bedroom
The kitchen
Crazy looking bathroom

That's very close to where we have stayed twice*--a great part of town. The market at Campo di Fiori is nearby and a great place to get your food and spices to take home. Our hotel building was similar but accommodations not as grand.
Color me jealous!
