Just about to make a post asking about spears vs. chips...are one of the other better for different kinds of pickles? Or all personal preference?
My cucumbers have enormous leaves and flowers, but not too much fruit yet.

What we grew up calling pickling cukes typically make for crisper pickles. They are a shorter cucumber and you don't want to let them get too fat. Since I don't know variety names, here's a link I ran across that might give you some helpful information: www.harvesttotable.com/2009/05/_here_are_20/. I didn't plant pickling cucumbers this year, only regular ones, just asking if, e.g. dill pickles are better as spears, etc.
My lack of fruiting is due to 1. being a little late getting started this year and 2. my garden spot is a little too shady, so everything is coming in slower than I want.
That is all due to closing on a house the first of May. I pretty much just took a shot with siting. I will have a different, more full sun spot for tomatoes and peppers next year. The current spot will work just find for lettuce, kale, onions, maybe potatoes.

My garden cukes are the same for the most part. I got all my supplies at the farmers market Saturday. We have great organic and chem free sellers in these parts.

Mine are Bush cucumbers, but I don't know if there is a variety beyond that. I planted from seed this year (First time for that too) and got my seed from Southern Exposure Seed Exchange.
Everything is growing well, just the fruiting is a little slow. Well, everything except the eggplant. NOt sure I'm getting any eggplant, the leaves have absolutely been ravished by something.
Going to expand quite a bit next year...butternut squash, here I come.

Spears are easier to pack into the jars and possibly might be ready to eat sooner than whole ones since the brine wouldn't need to permeate a whole cucumber.
