Taxis & terrain
Post by grevart on Aug 7, 2016 10:20:32 GMT -5
Thanks in advance.
My group will be staying 5 miles north of venue near Lovingston.
-Gonna bring the bikes and attempt to pedal to /from the venue.
How's the terrain? Very hilly or not too bad? Is hwy 29 bikeable?
-Might do taxis instead. How accessible are the taxis late night 2-3am?
Are there really taxis waiting in the designated shuttle /taxi area
shown on the festival map? or do you have to call one?

Uber is great! I'd suggest trying it out in your hometown once or twice to familiarize yourself with it. We use it all of the time on vacation when we're far from public transport or want to get somewhere quickly (NYC, DC, etc). I don't recommend trying it out for the first time at end of day at Lockn' when everyone is trying to get out of there. We have a big country music festival ten miles from us, and I've heard many tales of drivers canceling pickup because someone hops in their Uber and offers them cash on the side.
You will also be able to text or call your driver either through your phone or the app for location updates, like they'll say "I'm 50 yards north down such-and-such road parked next to a blue Jeep". In DC this spring I was on the phone with our Uber driver trying to find him near the Lincoln Memorial because only cabs could get in one side drive and he was circling waiting for us.
Even with surge pricing after an event, it is WAY worth it to not have to drive and GTFO.

The best tip you give them is a five star rating after your ride! I love to leave little reviews like "Mikki let me jam my own tunes" or "made a pit stop at a gas station off route". That really makes their days (or so I'm told).

A better plan, that I have friends who have used, is to draw straws for a DD for every day/night. One person in your group stays sober and drives you all back to the crib at the end of the night.
A MUCH better plan is to camp at the fest.

I wouldn't count them out totally. Uber drivers will go where there is a greater need and more chance of making money. For example, our local Uber drivers are virtually non-existent on the weekends because they head to the college town ten minutes away. Instead of a trickle of passengers on a Friday, they get constant passengers, and then get surge fares.
Lockn'=great need, longer distances, surge pricing, more cash in their pockets.
