Taxis & terrain

Highway 29 is rolling hills. Not easy, but definitely doable if you are a regular cyclist. I haven't biked it myself, but it is a somewhat busy state highway. Pretty wide shoulders I think. Part of the reason I don't bike much is because I don't like cars whizzing by me.

Don't know about taxis...

I definitely would not want to be on that road at 2AM on a bike.

You may be able to arrange someone to drive you; if you are at a motel/B&B, maybe they have someone willing? The better course is to drive and behave.

Thanks guys. Biking probably not a good idea, agreed. I'm not too familiar with uber. How do you utilize that?

Download the app. Very simple to use. When you are ready to go just enter the app and state you need to be picked up. The closest uber driver will get the alert and will accept it. You then get an update that your driver is on the way and it will give you a description of his car. It also tracks his car for you. It does have the potential to be a clusterfuck if enough people summon uber at the same time. I.e. end of show and not enough drivers to handle the requests. The fares will also be higher at this time to encourage more drivers to come out.

Uber is great! I'd suggest trying it out in your hometown once or twice to familiarize yourself with it. We use it all of the time on vacation when we're far from public transport or want to get somewhere quickly (NYC, DC, etc). I don't recommend trying it out for the first time at end of day at Lockn' when everyone is trying to get out of there. We have a big country music festival ten miles from us, and I've heard many tales of drivers canceling pickup because someone hops in their Uber and offers them cash on the side. 

You will also be able to text or call your driver either through your phone or the app for location updates, like they'll say "I'm 50 yards north down such-and-such road parked next to a blue Jeep". In DC this spring I was on the phone with our Uber driver trying to find him near the Lincoln Memorial because only cabs could get in one side drive and he was circling waiting for us. 

Even with surge pricing after an event, it is WAY worth it to not have to drive and GTFO. 

We use the hell out of Uber. Not really sure there are going to be all that many Uber rides out in the middle of bumfuck at 3am. Neither C'ville or Lynchburg are all that big and I'm not sure how active the Uber scene is in either of them. Just don't know but I would not be blindly relying on Uber to to get me home from Lockn late night.

A better plan, that I have friends who have used, is to draw straws for a DD for every day/night. One person in your group stays sober and drives you all back to the crib at the end of the night.

A MUCH better plan is to camp at the fest.

I wouldn't count them out totally. Uber drivers will go where there is a greater need and more chance of making money. For example, our local Uber drivers are virtually non-existent on the weekends because they head to the college town ten minutes away. Instead of a trickle of passengers on a Friday, they get constant passengers, and then get surge fares. 

Lockn'=great need, longer distances, surge pricing, more cash in their pockets.
