Crabtree Falls like southernman suggested is a really beautiful hike as well.

Getting in Wednesday night and staying in D.C. for the night. On the way home we will spend a day and tour the White house and see D.C. stuff. I just wanted to get up Thursday morning and head south, which is a 2 and a half hour drive. We are glamping so don't really need a lot of time to set up, maybe a 2 hour hike or sight seeing.

thanks we live in bone dry California where much of the state is on fire. So waterfalls would be nice!

It's a little known fact:
Crabtree Falls are the tallest cascading waterfalls east of Rockies...sorry just exploring my inner Cliffy.

You can come down the skyline to Afton then drop down to Arrington on 151 but you miss Crabtree.
Rather than stay "in DC" Wednesday I'd get as far away from there as you can that first night, say Warrenton, then wake up where it's beautiful and ride that groove to Lockn'. DC and Northern Virginia (NoVA) is just hellish. Picture driving out of LA for a nice day on the Pacific Coast Highway.
But whatever you choose, you will be in great country (except NoVA).

Crabtree Falls is great but anyone who goes should be super careful. Generally, at least one person a year is killed there slipping off the rocks.

No, it's serious. 4 deaths there last year if I recall correctly. If people who won't listen keep getting dashed on the rocks they'll ruin it for everybody b/c the park will be closed to the public.
