I'm doing the Wednesday arrival (VIP car) and wondering if people think it will be cool to get there around 4. I'm wondering what the volume might be and if people at the end of the line might get shut out.

This is the first year they've offered early entry, so it's hard to say.
However, given the fact that they made you register beforehand, I can't imagine anyone will get shut out.
Also, just a side note, you might want to keep an eye on that arrival time. According to Lockn', early entry will be 4:00 to 8:00, but according to VDOT, it will be 5:00 to 8:00.

I believe the main concern is the school buses. School is not in session on Thursday & Friday due to the festival. We hope to be there by 4pm, but it wouldn't surprise me in the least if we get an e-mail pushing out the arrival time to 5-9.

I have about a 10 hour drive but yes I'm trying to get there as close to 4 as I can. I don't anticipate any real lines & should go fine. And if I get there a little early, well. But al the official paperwork I have been sent all says 4:00 pm.

I am already in line for next year...standing in the Field of Broken Dreams in my mind...
(No facts or information to share, but I can't imagine they won't do early entry next year...I thought it made things go well for us GA folks this year...hope they start music a couple hours earlier!)

Things change a lot from year to year so it's hard to say. Last year they filled in the Rv campground from back to front as people arrived for early entry, so when I arrived at 4 I was assigned a hillside site far away, and it was difficult to get the trailer anywhere near level. Fishinginhatteras was near me. So if I go to Lockn this year and if I get early entry, I'm going to arrive closer to 7 than 4, assuming these are the hours this year.Hello all!

At which point, they will load front to back and you will be assigned a hillside site far away that will be difficult to level a trailer on.

Endless Summer is spot on. We played hell to even get CLOSE to being level, then your stairs were in need of an extra step. It was nice to get in and get all setup before anything happened, but I gotta admit two things:
1: Aint no way in hell I am setting up camp that far away again. Aint havin it. The hills combined with the heat took it's toll on all of us, young & old. Endless was about 40 yards from me, and NCLockn/Neil was about ten yards from us. We ALL played hell tryna get level out in the boonies. If we arrive too early in '17, and I see that we are gonna be parked there, I think ima pull off the trail and claim that I am working on something underneath my Airstream. And everyone in our party will gladly help me "fix" it while they fill in from the furthest away. That SUCKED last year, BIG time. Aint happenin' in 2017.
2: Gotta do bicycles this year. Neil's wife, Sarah made a point last night while we were sitting around the fire at his place: "Hell, at least with the bike you have something to lean on if you can't peddle up the hill." she said...and she said that well. Early entry did alleviate a ton of traffic on Thursday, and there is no doubt in my mind that they plan on doing it again. Hell, they make an extra 25 bones off of your azz too. Def need to start the music earlier. Quite a few peeps bought that 25 dollar ticket. There were a number of improvements last year that helped greatly, and the early entry was probably the most impacting decision they made. I can't see them NOT doing it again in '17.
