Correct, so my point is you don't want to do it twice or depending on your gate, loop back if you don't have to. OP had one coming from each direction, but to your good point, they both end up south of the entrance--so better to meet there (Amherst). Can anyone give me a recommendation for a gas station or something that's close to the fest, but not so close that it's after the line to get in starts, that would be a good meet-up spot for us and our friends? We are coming from the south and they are coming from RVA.

Yeah that's what makes it tricky. I see the route via 60 you are talking about, maybe I can convince them to do that. What about either Colleen or Lovingston? Maybe we could go by the fest a little bit and continue north and meet them there? Think we'd have a problem with traffic?

You probably want them to go a little south of the festival, that is if you are GA. Everyone coming from the North must pass the festival, go about 4-5 miles, and can then use a turnaround to go back North. Last year at 5 am, northbound from the 56 junction, one lane of the two lane highway was solid cars creeping.
The other lane for passing traffic, all VIP and RV's, was shakey--it rolled until some wook Winnebago from the 70's took a dump in the only moving lane. Luckily there were troopers right there who rolled it into the median. Close call.
Southbound was heavy, too. So don't subject yourself to that.

Everyone in an RV, be it GA or VIP, be it Wednesday or Thursday, be it arriving from North or South, will pass within a hundred yards of the Lovingston Food Lion at the stop light.

Yes, if you are GA car camping coming from the North you have to go past the fest and turnaround and head back North towards the fest. So, please correct me if I'm wrong, but what I seem to be reading here is that all RVs coming from the south continue up to Lovingston to exit for the fest?
I'm trying to make the same arrangements as the OP. I am coming from the north in a car that is going into day parking and I want to meet an RV coming from the south so I can stow all my stuff in the RV.

There is a Food Lion in Amherst and Ambriar Shopping Center in Amherst (south of Arrington) that would be suitable for a meetup/exchange. Far enough away from the fest to not get caught up in that traffic but still relatively close (16 miles via Rt. 29).

Does lockn' provide anymore detail instructions about which gate a person is supposed to enter? It seems strange that they have 3 specific gates of the map but no where on the website does it tell you which gate to go to based on what camping you have.
Another question, if I have to pick up tickets at will call Thursday morning will I be able to bypass parts of the line to get there? Or will I have to wait in line with everybody else and lose my spot in line to pick up wristbands? (my friends in another car already have theirs)

if you are car/tent camping, there is only one entrance. just drive up/down 29 towards the farm and you can't miss it.
as far as will call, yes, you'll have to stop and get your stuff. if you are rolling with other people, someone else can keep your car in line while you run up to the box office to get your wristbands. it's literally on the way there, so even if you have to pull your car off, it's really not that big of a deal

There are signs on Rt. 29 that direct you to the correct entrance.
