I was SECOND ROW??
Can't always get the rail...
Actually didn't do much rail riding this year. It was too hot to camp there, so I just made it up a few times for some early acts. On main stage, for BRB, I was rail or row 2 for all the shows.

I like that this is a positive place where I can get away from all that shit. I ditched the book of faces years ago because I saw a potentially great tool torn down by assholes.

Lotta sorried today about dipshittery today, TOO $ . Love you right back.
I am a bit of an early adopter for many applications (although I never buy version 1 of any hardware!).
I was on Twitter by 2009 - never really appreciated it until Dead50 and the ticket madness surrounding it. Then I realized that if the end of the world happens in my lifetime it will be because of Twitter...
I actually had a Geocities web site for all you geeky fossils that know what that is.
I was fascinated with the internet and the potential for communication. That's when I realized that I really had nothing to say to to world...
And like Doug Adams said in The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy when the Babel Fish was discovered [The Babel Fish - a universal translator between all sentient species] "Meanwhile, the poor Babel fish, by effectively removing all barriers to communication between different races and cultures, has caused more and bloodier wars than anything else in the history of creation."
Communication is a double edged sword.

I had just started learning about computers in the 8th grade, 1974 for those keeping score. There was one main frame downtown that took up an entire large room and the schools each had one teletype (think typewriter). I had this really crazy idea then. What would happen if you could connect a series of computers by wires and share information between them and have one teletype be able to access the information on all of them? Mind you this was many years before the public internet as we know it came to be so I had nothing to base this idea on but original thought. Little did I know, or could I know, that the defense department had been doing this very thing for years and the internet as we know it was still a decade away.

”Kids these days” value feeling safe above free speech. That is not a judgement, just an observation. Therefore those who want to continually prove to the group they uphold that value are perpetually calling out things that make them or others feel unsafe. I think a parallel would be the person from our generation who wouldn’t shut up about free speech or continuously said extreme things to demonstrate free speech. Both are annoying and more a sign of a weak self esteem than demonstrating anything about either value.

But the tech nostalgia is great. Sorry TOO if you end up having to spin some of these posts off into an off-topic thread.
I didn't have a computer growing up. Lack of foresight as well as funding; this was the late 80s and typing was still only mandatory for business majors at my high school, if you can believe that. I found myself around the turn of the century in a situation where I had to learn everything by the seat of my pants, but I caught up pretty fast. I was among the first wave of redditors, and one of the first to delete my account there too. I beta tested Hulu, but anyone who knew it was coming (like people on reddit!) could have done that. I learned very quickly the real secret to the information age: ask someone smarter, or at least more experienced than you. That eventually morphed into "just Google it!" but I miss the days when you could find any answer by searching for and on forums similar to this one. And it was all free because geeks were that anxious to show off. Getting reacquainted with bbcode on here gives me almost of a warm glow as you fine folks. I also somehow about 15 years ago ended up spending the better part of a year in the MIS department of an evangelical Christian media company, despite having no credentials or portfolio...but that's a story for another time.
slyp, I found Twitter, or at least Deadhead Twitter, very useful in the run-up to FTW too. I deleted my account after the shows though, because I had actually managed to attract enough of a following to exacerbate my paranoia. Maybe not everyone on one's Friends list is really a friend but you've probably met them, ya know? At any rate, that penchant for obsessive research with these things is what dumped me and Sue off here in the first place. Ain't life grand?
