Welcome to the Lockn' Forum - The home of the original Lockn' Music Festival family!
Bring or borrow a beach umbrella - - unless you selected Forest Camping. Camping chairs too, or similar. My experience at L1 was that Oak Ridge campgrounds were treeless and sky cloudless = hot sun; and rough terrain & sitting on the ground by our tent wasn't ideal. Unless that's changed in the last 2 years and new trees have planted/ sprung for intermittent sun relief, your experience'll be most definitely enhanced by *not* planting your dance-weary self in the red clay rough-mowed ground of your campsite during down time/ idle time when inside the tent is too stuffy and you'd like to rest in open air. We'd thrown in an old beach umbrella in our car on impulse, not knowing; and even today we agree that was the best last-minute item ever packed. Sun still rises early-ish late August here in VA and this years' temps supposed to reach 90 or more most days! I wouldn't rule out a battery-powered fan either, most take 4-6 D-cells. Please note: This forum is in no way officially associated with Lockn' Festival or its promoters.

First, are you car camping or tent only camping or more likely single day camping (wherever that is)?

bring something to sleep off the ground - walmart airmattress works great, just don't forget your rechargeable pump (and charge it before leaving home) because you can't plug it in.
gortex jacket, or equivalent. ya know, to make sure it doesn't rain.
tarp. 5 by 7 size. just have one.
mallet to pound tent stakes into the ground.
groundcloth for under tent. this is vital. it must NOT stick out from under the tent. if it does, tuck it under. again, this is just to make sure it doesn't rain.

It is crazy how many tents you see set up with a few extra feet of tarp sticking out underneath. Common sense people...

Bring two or three coolers. One to keep ice in, one for drinks. , one for food. Transfer the ice over to the drink cooler as needed but keep the ice cooler closed and in the shade all the time. I wrap it in a solar blanket to be safe If you have a food cooler. Put the ice in a gallon zip lock so it does not soak everything. Or use water bottles that you free ahead of time.
Those are my two best festival tips.

I'm ashamed to admit how many festivals it took me to learn this simple trick to staying dry. Now I try to be a good neighbor and tell my neighbors when I see it. Sometimes the are appreciate, most they just stare at me with a blank face.

Boyscouts are good for a few things, my dads idea of camping involves a hotel.

I would never have even thought having the tarp tucked under was necessary, until my Eagle Scout husband schooled me My camping expriences have been pretty good thanks to him

But that never happens.
Real camping is all about beating the natural challenges and staying comfortable, and it's a great sense of accomplishment when you win.
You only need to know how to address these few conditions, be equipped to do so, or know how to adapt other equipment instead:
too wet
too dry
too windy
too still
too hot
too cold
too dark
too sunny
Too rocky/lumpy
too hilly
too buggy
too far to get to X
too loud (fest camping)
too hard (ground)
too soft/muddy/slippery (ground)
Leaks, rips, tears, broken, melts, freezes, missing, wrong size, dead.
Otherwise, nothing to it!

Other than those ABC agents a couple years ago--who aren't real cops IMO--the cops working Lockn' are not looking for trouble or to win prizes for the most busts. They'd rather avoid it, and most enjoy the good vibes of everyone having fun. Many enjoy the show--on stage, and off (Willie Nelson in L2 was a gift from management to the local LEO BTW). They, like everyone else, like some easy overtime.
So Lockn' gives us all an opportunity to relieve the tension brewing outside our playpen and go out of our way to be nice to the cops who are there, thank them, include them. It could pay back tenfold--especially Monday on the way out and home!
