Like many my relationship with Lockn has been up and down over the past 6 months. The past three years were my dream line up and I expected this year to be no different. The rumors of Dead and Company and Phish alongside the usual suspects such as WSP and SCI had me feverishly trolling message boards all through February looking for the latest rumor, the latest tidbit, so on so forth. When the line up finally dropped I was underwhelmed, disappointment that continued with each subsequent announcement. Time after time I asked myself: Are we really transitioning from Deadcentric to a Phish Phry? My Morning Jacket are good but why are they the Saturday headliner? Why so much funk and not enough grass? Why did they raise the prices after last years cancellation? Peter Wolf in prime time-really? What the fuck is a Khruangbin? Where is this yuge announcement that never comes? My normal crew made it clear they had no interest in this year and I was leaning towards the same.
As I spent the summer seeing shows I realized I was being a fool for letting initial disappointment color my perceptions. Yes I'll miss Cheese and Panic and I'll miss my usual crew but this is still far and away the best line up of the summer. I mean Phish, Phil, Umph, Jrad and others at one festival? Asking for any more is greed. That coupled with the Lockn magic leaves me with no doubt this will be a legendary weekend just as the past three years have been.
So as we're waiting in that car line tomorrow (Maybe this is the year they finally get their act together?), sweating our asses off in the heat, and adding miles to our legs with all of the hiking, remember that this is the best time of the year and all we can do is cherish it. We spend months on this board talking about this fest and now its finally here. Now its time to just smile and let loose. Drink that extra beer, take that extra whatever, pass the piece to your neighbor and make a new friend. And if none of those are your thing that's cool too because in the end its the music and atmosphere that bring us all together. Whatever your stressors are-be they work, family, money, whatever, leave it at home.
