This would be a great time to start talking about how much greater Dead & Company is than Furthur. Furthur reunion

Ha challenge accepted. For me it's close but I give the nod to Furthur if nothing else because of the personal nostalgia factor. They were the first band I followed once I hopped on the bus in '09 thus were my intro to live Dead music. I love Deadco, I think they bring more energy to some nights/songs, two drummers are better than one, and Mayer's chops are technically better than JK's except for a handful of songs (JK nails the dew and wharf rat namely). Beyond nostalgia, Furthur had a much wider and less predictable songbook. Sure that meant you sometimes got what's become of the baby followed by Phil singing Alligator near the end of the 2nd set but you also got gems like a Terrapin Suite encore or King Solomons in the first set. With Dead and Company you can sometimes predict the majority of the show just by looking at past set lists. I do believe they'll learn more songs as they tour more but Phil has always been (for better or worse) me willing to take risks than Bob. This would be a great time to start talking about how much greater Dead & Company is than Furthur. Furthur reunion

For me the nod goes to DeadCo. I saw a handful of Furthur shows and loved them. Bob was certainly not on top of his game then. He has been completely rejuvenated since he started playing with DeadCo. I loved Furthur set lists and I am sure DeadCo set lists will improve. One thing missing from Furthur was Billy and Mickey, well Billy anyway. Russo is a beast for sure but I will take Billy. Not sure what Mickey is doing half of the time. Then there is Phil. I love Phil but if Furthur plays a one off or two off there will be little to no practice, just like FTW and every Phil and Friends lineup in recent history. Plus in DeadCo there is no Phil singing. So for me, hands down, give me Weir, Mayer, Oteil, Chimenti, Billy and Mickey. And that is why Dead and Company is greater than Furthur...

not to take the academic cop out and thicken the question but are we asking who was/is better in their prime or who would be better at L5? I agree on Phil=lack of rehearsals (are you relentlessly practicing your craft at age 76?) and I agree his singing is bad but I don't think either were as big of a problem during Furthurs heyday. Phil has never been a good singer but back then he could at least fit it into the music and hold up for an entire song, not so much anymore. Also back then they were doing long planned tours and TXR wasn't open yet so Phil had a lot more time and patience to rehearse. I love Dead and Company and think them at Lockn would be much tighter and better rehearsed than a one off Furthur reunion. However, I think Russo and JK alone would be so energized to be playing with Bob and Phil again that they could bring the music to new heights. I'm thrilled with one or the other, crying tears of tie-dyed joy for both.

Great response and it led me to change the title. What matters, to me, is who would be better at Lockn 5...for me DeadCo all the way.

I think Dead and Company has a better chance of playing two nights/two sets each night so maybe they'd be a better choice. We're a full year away from L5 and the speculative slate has been wiped clean regarding who's a possibility and who's not so hell lets shoot for the moon and say Two nights of Dead and Company and one night of Furthur!Great response and it led me to change the title. What matters, to me, is who would be better at Lockn 5...for me DeadCo all the way.
