We, Generation X and younger, are not necessarily good enough with tools for DIY. There was an explosion of divorce that hasn't really abetted back in the 70s, and a lot of us had absent fathers. I'm sure our moms would have trained us with tools if they'd known how.

It's nice that spares are available. I've bought them in bulk. My cooler only breaks when I'm packed and about to hit the road. So, I have a drawer in my garage with extra hinges, latches and handles that are there when I need them. What irritates me is that they're so frequently needed. If I pack my cooler, and I'm able to pick it up, the handles SHOULD NOT break.

I was gifted a Yeti insulated cup. It's bad-ass. Made me want a Yeti cooler until I went shopping for one. I think we've decided on a store brand knock-off. Leaning towards the Cabela Polar Cap.

Pretty cool. I wonder if this is their basic cooler with bells and whistles attached or their heavy duty with the same. If their basic, I would rather a plain old HD.

Would be nice if a test was done comparing all these. Seems like a simple comparison. Load em with ice and leave them all out in the summer elements for a week and see who has the most ice intact at the end.

works best over sand. Back in the day friends had this big jam on a beach and would bury a keg, but made the hole big enough to surround it with ice (we had a large supply of free ice from a commercial fisherman who lived on that beach).

We've discussed here wheels and carts; I was at Cabela's this weekend and in addition to an excellent cart with big tires for surf fishing (but expensive) there are also the carts used to haul deer carcasses out of the woods. Light but sturdy; big wheels for rough terrain; versatile for what you can strap on. You could probably borrow one off-season from a deer-hunting friend if you don't.

It would also be good for returning your incapacitated friends to the campsite, but please don't field dress them first. Beer out; buddies home.

From what I heard there was a schism in the Yeti universe (can't remember if it was the two brothers that founded it or one of the guys and his wife). RTIC is the product of that schism. I have several RTIC items (30oz. tumbler, 10 oz. lowball, 32 and 64 oz. bottles). I love them and they are half the price of Yetis. May have to get the 70Q cooler next. I got a 75Q Coleman that is supposed to hold ice for 5 days. I haven't run it through the full set of tests (back off man, I'm a scientist), but anecdotally, it doesn't seem to meet that.

Didn't realize that was the history surrounding Rtic. I went with the 65qt. Takes 2 months to ship so if interested it does take a while.

I have a Coleman Extreme (Built to survive the real world) - not so much. Two Igloo Xtreme - both are POS. And an Igloo Marine which I like but requires spares and tools. Looking forward to this one.
