Hurricane Matthew discussion

Nothing can prepare you for it even though you know it's coming. I sympathize and relate.

I live in Wayne County, NC. One of the hardest hit in SE NC. The "100 year flood" as the old timers have dubbed it. Total devastation in these parts, just a few miles down the road, homes were flooded to roof lines. My family suffered no damage, no injury SO BLESSED. We had no water or electricity for 6 days, but shit... we do that on vacation so no big deal, totally prepared... just get out the camp gear.  We live in an old house that was built pre-Hurricane Hazel which was a doozy back in the 50s that folks still talk about, she never sprung a leak. But I do feel "survivor guilt" going to the grocery store driving by and seeing people I grew up with hanging their clothes up in trees, mattresses, furniture, toys, everything out on the lawn. Water flooded up to the roof lines of these homes. Small businesses that may not bounce back, all their inventory in parking lots completely destroyed. But I have to say that I am so proud of my community. Boy!! Did they get their shit together in a hurry and help out their neighbors. It's been a beautiful thing to see how much love we all have for one another. My Dad, friggin awesome dude... lives in a part of the county that had minimal impact. He goes out and finds lots of water, ice and BEER from all these different places and hilarous stories about how he comes into possession of these luxuries and brings a truck bed of water and huge cooler of iced down beers out here to my house in the country on the one road that he can pass. One of my fondest memories from this ordeal is him, me, some chairs under the pecan tree that somehow remained... drinking very cold beers and telling stupid jokes in a time of sadness.  I will never forget that precious moment with him.  Some folks didn't have water to flush their toilets!   My brother in law loads his truck with buckets of his pool water and delivers to the neighbors so they can flush, and then came back by later to those homes so they could replenish their toilet water.  The Fireman and Rescue folks are HEROS up in this community, unbelievable what these guys and gals have put their bodies through and keep smiling and so happy to help.  Our school has been closed since the storm hit, we start back on Thursday. Many roads around here are still impassable.  Sorry for the lengthy post, it's just been a while.  We got power back on and the next day I got sick AF and today finally feeling way better due  to medication... and whiskey.  Although the Cubs are not helping. 

It's amazing how neighbors and strangers come together at times like these. Some light in this tragic time.

We lucked out here. Just trees down and power out a couple of days. Next town over, not so lucky. God bless all those people out there so quickly to help with recovery.
