Initially bailed on the Festy (it was always going to be a game time decision if I went) to go to the funeral of a friend's mom. Moonshine was not the extra grilled cheese guy. That mystery guy tied himself to lobster somehow. But at least he appreciates an amazing grilled cheese sandwich!I remember, but just barely. I'm so, so sorry for your loss. I had two friends who couldn't find their way out from that horrible disease either. One was the "it" girl of our group; gorgeous, outgoing, accomplished, funny, and a complete mess inside. It's a completely different kind of grief for those left behind. Take care of yourself, and let me know if you need to talk about it.

Thanks all. I'm making baby steps towards peace. All of us that loved him felt blindsided and that made it so much harder. Those first few days were rough. Two other close buddies and I all felt like we failed him by missing the signs we saw in hindsight. I knew that wasn't the case, but my heart was too heavy to let my brain make that decision. But I do know we weren't to blame. We were lucky that there is a large group of people that loved him so there's lots of folks to lean on.
Going back home for the weekend to see many of our classmates and hug helped a lot, but some serious music therapy is in order too. The perfect cherry on top of the craptastic week was getting selected to serve on a sexual assault jury the last two days. Yesterday during testimony, it wasn't too bad. Having no cell phone in court was a welcome diversion. The 11 Facebook messages, 2 texts, and 5 emails from people checking in on me or looking for info closed that diversion. The verdict deliberations were hard, but the sentencing deliberations were flat out tough.
One of the signs by best friends and I felt we missed was his bailing on this year's Lockn'. He had been a volunteer for the first three and claimed he wasn't a Phish fan as his reason. We talked about that this year and how being with friends is just as important as the bands on the stage.

I'm so glad you understand it's not your fault, hondo. Now I know I don't have to worry too much about you too.
Folks, if you know me, you know that I've never been shy about being frank about my mental illness. I believe we are only as sick as our secrets. I don't wanna make this about me, but I want to both thank and commend you all for never flinching or changing the subject. That's how you win the fight with stigma.
I've talked about this before, but I want to repost here something I recently put on my FB:
"I have so many new friends, I thought it would be a good idea to reiterate my policy: if you're feeling down and you need to talk to someone who will just listen, I'm here for you. Any time, day or night. You won't be a bother, and I will gladly get out of bed. Don't hold it all inside; get it all out. My number is freely available in my profile for just this reason.
I will listen."

Thanks, TOO. I know it wasn't a seamless split, but we scare too many people away as it is. hondo please no worries about the thread getting "hijacked." It's obvious you needed to talk about this, and I'm glad that you did.

The thing that just is so counter intuitive to me is that so many people feel it's a sign of weakness to ask for help, while it's actually a sign of incredible strength. I don't know if that will change until the stigma gets wiped out. Worf is absolutely correct (go ahead and use this line repeatedly in any fashion as needed), in that open discussion is needed. This will help wipe out the stigma.
I'm lucky that I never seem to get in too dark a place. I get my funks, but typically, I find something that amuses me, then I take it to it's completely ridiculous illogical conclusion (because why the hell not?). By that time I'm smiling and on the way back. So being easily amused is a good thing for me. I also use music therapy. There are some Dead shows and Jerry band shows that I can't help but grin when I listen to them.

I don't know if that is because of stigma or it is the nature of the disease. Its a black hole.

I play the world's worst banjo. So bad that I never bring it to fests, and even sneake has never seen me play. It helps, tho. Public music is fine, but it's more than acceptable to make private music. Lap dulcimers are wicked easy to learn, and you can get one shaped like a guitar. I can also recommend the auto-harp. Here's Susan's college guitar teacher and Paul Simon's current lead guitar/bandleader Mark Stewart to explain more. He believes that 'the word 'musician' is too often used to discourage people from participating in their birth right as sound-makers, and I couldn't agree more. I swell with pride that this incredible man is my wife's friend, and meeting him in person at a Paul concert may never be topped as a highlight of my life.

She was amazing, and just a few months before she passed away we had what I call a "movie" moment. We snuck out of our ten year class reunion (totally lame) with a few others and sat under the stars in my convertible passing around a bottle of Southern Comfort and laughing. She was so very special, my BV.
She was manic depressive, and after finding online messages her boyfriend had been sending to another girl, shot herself in front of her computer screen, with those messages displayed. The mania won.
