Welcome to the Lockn' Forum - The home of the original Lockn' Music Festival family!
"White Trash" by Nancy Isenberg subtitle "the 400 year untold history of class in America." She's a professor at LSU who spends time in C-ville, too. ETA: finished it. the end sort of meandered with more opinion but the beginning was more historical exposition. I am intrigued to find that most of the non-fiction I read today contradicts the non-fiction I read yesterday. I often find that yesterday's non-fiction was sometimes, in fact, fiction--an example is Captain John Smith's writings, upon which so much Virginia history is based. Sometimes it's a factor of new or better information, but more often, better perspective. But I learned in my albeit brief days of journalism that there are no facts and every writing is opinion. I can't remember the last time I had enough time to read a novel. According to the Amazon app, I'm somewhere in the middle of Infinite Jest, and I don't expect that to change any time soon.

I'm a big time reader- had a pretty chaotic childhood so I spent a lot of time buried in books. I used to walk home from school and read- barely looking for cars as I crossed streets. I usually have 2-3 books going at once for whatever suits my mood- I also am constantly picking up my favorites and re-reading them. I'm also an author/writer myself. I use writing as a form of therapy. It's very cathartic.
These days I read mainly books on sustainability, economics, etc. for my Master's degree. I have no time to read anything else, really. It is very depressing.
I just downloaded Andy Cohen's "Superficial" onto my Nook (I am a pop culture junkie) which I keep stashed in my purse to read when I'm at a train, waiting in the car for a child to exit one of the million places I have to pick them up from.
During Winter Break I want to finally read the Handmaid's Tale.

It explores the intentional class system of the landless poor from settlement to today. While it obviously includes the African American experience it mainly focuses on the whites, and how both societal conventions as well as laws kept them stuck and powerless. Much of it is centered around political history. And she discusses the times "white trash" have made it to high offices and positions, such as the presidency of Andrew Jackson and Bill Clinton.
But it primarily shows that the "American dream"--that anyone can succeed, is fiction, always was, and reserved for the upper reaches. Jefferson's acceptance, and endorsement, of the split society is especially interesting. That's the split between poor and wealthy.
The book just came out this summer so it misses the current ugliness from the recent campaigns (which I do not wish to open to discussion here), but it explains our history to put those things in an understandable context.
On a somewhat positive note, though, it shows the shared oppressed experience common to most Americans, regardless of race or nationality.

Electronics have made it a little easier, though - the footnotes being hyperlinked eliminates the need for multiple bookmarks.

Trying to stir the pot huh? And this could have been such an awesome thread, but no, you had to stir it up. Religious digresses into political digresses into polorization. That said, I'm gonna turn and run from this conversation with one last parting comment, "please don't do that again it is a good forum for music!"

Being well-read is a dangerous thing and I, for one, don't mind a bit if this thread gets a little edgy.

As long as that is the case we can keep moving forward with this thread as long as we don't introduce religion into it, or any others. Let's see where it goes...
