What are you reading?

I was being tongue in check, but I should know better on that topic on a forum. My apologies.

1. Avoid politics, anything to do with the recent election and campaign, and political social issues.

2. Keep discussions of religious topics respectful, best done by being explanatory rather than persuasive.

3. Never try to describe or state what another person thinks, especially based on a label ("you conservatives are racists").

4. Remember that generalizations and labels, although convenient, are dangerous (see example in #3).

Following interest in Italy, let me commend Salman Rushdie's novel The Enchantress of Florence, one of my favorites.

Set in two stages in Moghul India and Renaissance Italy (Florence), it weaves historical characters from each era into an interesting, almost magical tale of intersecting lives. I do not like "fantasy" but here the small amount works.

I believe it presents a historically accurate view of the two worlds then, and beyond, although fiction, and I loved the way real historical characters appear--in character. Though I've been to India I don't know its history but I know that time in Italy*, so when Vespucci, the Medici, Machiavelli show up, you get to see them in action. He likes to tease out the historical characters so that you know about them as figures in the story before he reveals the real person.

But outside all the seriousness it's a great read and could do just find as light reading along the lines of Game of Thrones--without as much fantasy.

Working on the Christmas story "Pretty Paper" by Willie Nelson

Based on the song written by Willie, I try and read a holiday based book each Christmas and the Mrs gave me this one as a gift. Good lite read.

got a new book for Christmas "The Old Fashioned" about the cocktail. Yum yum.

So how's the book? I've been thinking about buying it.
