So my best girlfriend of twenty odd years asked me to go on a mini vacation with her in April. She's only been on a plane for one other trip, and never out of the country. She's also a hard working single mom so she deserves the trip. She really, really wanted to go to Cancun. I am opposed to tourist traps like these unless its Jamaica, but I love her so I'm going. We booked an all inclusive resort called Riu Tequila.

Anyone have any suggestions on cool things that we can do there? Must-see excursion? Off the beaten path restaurant? Area to avoid or a particular scam that goes on there? We'll only be there four days, and she already said all she wants to do is lay on the beach and drink, but that idea makes me cringe!

one of the best series of guide books for people who like cheap and interesting travel are the "Lonely Planet" books. Back in the day*, they carried backpackers (including me) through Southeast Asia and India, then South America, now everywhere.

Although Cancun was recently built as a tourist resort destination, there are some "native" sites nearby. But although "touristy" the beaches and waters are spectacular.

As with any resort in a third world country, be smart about venturing off campus, and be prepared for a shake-down or two.

You can't have a bad time, and while I know what you're saying about doing more interesting things, your four days will fly by and you will also appreciate getting out of the frozen north.

I went to Cancun thirty years ago when there were only four hotels on the beach. Beers and shots were a buck, people were crazy, food was cheap.

And then I went there 10 years ago, and it's pretty much like Murica. Every crappy chain restaurant you can find at home.

However, outside of town, Chichen Itza and Tulum are awesome day trips. And also a trip to a cenote, any cenote. And somewhere we snorkeled in an old quarry that had an opening to the sea so it was salty and full of very chill barracudas.

as far as the beach in Cancun goes, I'd give it a 3. Narrow, mini waves, and sometimes weird sea weed growth explosions that pile up on the beach.

still, fun can be had, and I wish you guys a great trip. Avoid the legions of time share sales creeps. They start right at the airport.
