anyone have any good ideas on how i can prevent myself from missing any awesome shows? i don't ever have up to date info. i dont search forums and bands' websites all the time. for instance, wsp played 3 days in my hometown a couple weeks ago and it was all acoustic sets and i missed them! i didn't find out until the week after that they were here! i'm very much still learning this genre of music but have loved it as soon as i heard it. tell me how i can get the low down on shows in my area

If there are specific venues in your area that bands would play, you can get yourself onto the venues' email lists. I know I just got an email from a local theater that started with "As someone who enjoys jam bands, you may appreciate these upcoming shows...". I guess they know me well already from the shows I've purchased tickets for.

It is hard to keep up, but what Suebhunny said about being on venue's email list's & I also tap into ticketmaster with your zip code, & I sometimes find who is on tour in the music section of MSN. Then I get a lot from word of mouth. I also check web sites of local radio stations. I'm not sure there is just one place for everything.

But the ones who claim to have info like Jambase you can't rely on. Like the Allman Brothers they only have the Beacon Theater shows listed. If you want to start a good one you would have a lot of people on board.

Sign up for e-mail alerts from live nation, ticket master, and music today when you buy tickets for whatever. Sometimes I get seats from the theater itself and you'll also get info from them. I get updates for every city I see shows in. Then pretty much Jambase for everything else.

Easily one of my favorite websites.

Pollstar is pretty good about keeping tour dates current. Plus, if you have the time, you can create an account and sign up for email alerts on specific bands (venues, as well, I think).

My other suggestion would simply be to develop a routine for scouting shows. I have the "calendar" or "events" page for all of my favorite venues bookmarked in one folder of my web browser. Once a week, I open them all up to look for new shows (in addition to perusing pollstar). It only takes me about 10 minutes to scroll through and the payoff is well worth the time spent.

I keep a calendar. I have festival dates, tour dates (WSP, Mule & Phish mostly) and club dates. I pay attention to WSP, Mule & Phish and know when tours are announced. I also know the venues around here in Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill and like suebhunny I browse their calendars online like once a week. I also check the venue calendars of select venues in Charlotte, Ashville, Wilmington, Greensboro, Richmond etc. I also follow some bands and venues on Facebook. I also hang out on places like this and post/read about tours or shows that interest me. And most of my friends are varying degrees of active in the jam scene and we keep each other informed. Whenever something piques my interest I add it to my calender. It has a TON of stuff I will not go to but I tend not to miss shows because I don't know about them.

Jambands.com and Jambase.com are pretty good with tour announcements. Also check your local major promoters to see if they have a regular email distribution. In Colorado, both AEG and Live Nation have weekly emails announcing new shows & on sale dates.
