Theirs is a very good product. Initially they were tied to Eads, a distillery in Scotland that makes a fine "double malt". They started by just aging raw whisky from Eads while they built their stills, which are now on line. A big thing is using Virginia wineries' barrels for the aging.
So look for Virginia Highland single malt. I may bring some. Wassermund's, also in Nelson Co down by Scottsdale, makes a single malt they try to make like an Islay (smokey, peaty) but it isn't very good (at least the batch I tried a couple years ago).
As for liquor licenses, they are likely only in small controlled areas like VIP, not in the general population. And under ABC laws you can get a permit for a tasting but you can't serve more than about an ounce to a taster (we've done them at my wife's antique shop).

That makes sense. I believe the tastings at the distillery are pretty limited as well.
I know a little about alcohol law here in VA as it pertains to beer and wine and temp. permits, but I don't know anything about the details on liquor.

I think at Lockn they have sold some sort of mixed concoction such as Pina Coladas or the like. I am not sure what is in those, but I always assumed that if they were already mixed and below a certain %, they fell under the beer and wine license, but again, I confess this is out of my area of knowledge.
