I have a group of three that will be arriving Friday morning for Forest Camping. I am concerned about what kind of site we will be left with getting there a day after most. I know that we are guaranteed a spot. Can anyone offer me some insight and possibly calm my fears?

So I hate to be the source of bad news, but in past years the forest access has been pretty uncontrolled and a lot of squatters.
I do not know if this has changed with the new layout. It looked like the Lumni tent only is set up for access control but I didn't see anything like that for forest.

We originally were in Car Camping but switched to Forest based on reading this forum. Would you recommend going back to Car Camping for a Friday arrival? Thanks

I really don't know. I haven't done Car or Forest Camping before. (We have done GA RV every year). But from what I have gathered on here is that people that arrived early had a generally positive experience. People that arrived later, somewhat less so. I don't know about arriving Friday. That is quite late and I could imagine that all the primo spots are gone by the end of Thursday and that by sometime Friday squatters have filled the remaining spots. I am not certain that they CAN guarantee a spot. I know that sounds outrageous and in fact is. You paid for it and that should guarantee a spot. Ask the folks that got bumped to a crappy ADA spot after ADA got full one year. Not trying to talk you out of anything but just want you to be cognizant of the possibilities. Hopefully I am being overly pessimistic and someone with better first hand knowledge of arriving late for Forest Camping will speak up.

Car camping is all marked out, people take up the spot they are given, and you will always get your car camping spot.
As has been said, forest camping is kind of a free-for-all. They mark out some "fire lanes" where you CANNOT camp, and folks grab everything else in a pretty haphazard manner. Coming in Friday will be quite difficult. You'll have pretty slim pickings.
