Anyone have any recommendations for this city? Going on my own the day after turkey day and I'll be there for 6 days for an overseas job interview. I'll have a ton of free time though and want to explore.

Six days now that is one long interview I must say. I don't have any recommendations but make sure that you negotiate plenty of time off for LOCKN. Must keep those priorities in order...oh and GOOD LUCK!!

We'll see what happens, it's too good of an opportunity to turn down to interview for (not sure if I really even want the job) and the Mrs. is not too excited by the idea.

If it's like similar places I've visited, look for cheap red wine, cured meats, artisan cheeses and fresh baked bread. "Paprika" is red peppers but not the hot kind; like the green peppers we have. Goulash is any hearty stew.

Made in Hungary - Kézműves Csemege - Budapest, Ráday u. 7, 1092 Hungary
House of Terror -
Budapest, Andrássy út 60, 1062 Hungary - Museum of Stalinist era Hungary
Dohány Street Synagogue - Budapest, Dohány u. 2, 1074 Hungary - Second largest synagogue in the world
Matthias Church - Budapest, Szentháromság tér 2, 1014 Hungary - Romanesque church that has been a mosque and then church again
Hungarian National Gallery (Magyar Nemzeti Galéria) -
1014 Budapest, Szent György tér 2., Hungary - Spend a little money and do a tour
Castle Hill neighborhood - Spend a day just wandering around.
Fisherman's Bastion
- Halászbástya - Budapest, Szentháromság tér, 1014 Hungary - Overlook in the Castle Hill hood
Hungarian Parliament Building - Budapest, Kossuth Lajos tér 1-3, 1055 Hungary - Huge gothic building. Will not see anything like it anywhere.
Gellért Thermal Bath - Budapest, Kelenhegyi út 4, 1118 Hungary - Go ahead and do it
Memento Park - Budapest, Balatoni út - Szabadkai utca sarok, 1223 Hungary - A bit out of center of town but a park with Communist era sculpture gardens
"Ruin Pubs" - (Budapest is famous for its “ruin pubs”, in which shabby-chic is the order of the day. The best ruin pubs are set up in sprawling, deserted buildings, which have been filled with comfortable, but slightly worn out furniture.
Each pub has its own unique style, so you will often find visitors referring to their favourite pub as “the one with the…”. Popular ruin pubs include Instant (“the one with the crazy animal pictures”), Fogas Ház (“the one with the teeth), Kuplung (“the one with the whale”) and Szimpla.)
Drink Tokaji wine, pálinka (local fruit brandy- homemade if you can weasel it), Unicum (Hungarian Jägermeister only sweeter)
Just make sure you make eye contact when your glasses clink! And learn the Hungarian word for cheers: Egészségedre (egg-is-shae-ged-re) which means literally “to your health”. It’s a mouthful, but everyone will be impressed with your knowledge of the Hungarian language and perhaps offer you something more to drink.
Stuff to eat and where to eat it in Budapest

Trip was absolutely fantastic.
Day 1: Did a tour of the Buda side with a 1on1 tour guide at night, was such an awesome tour even though we were interrupted a lot by a visiting Chinese delegation. I think I'm def gonna do 1 on 1 tour from now on because I enjoyed it so much more than our usual group tours. Saw basically everything there was to see on the Buda side, went back to Pest to meet up with a friend at the Ruin bars, was awesome.
Day 2: Did a tour of the Terror House in the morning, was pretty freaking uplifting (not). Came back and met up with my guide and we did a tour of the Pest side. Was staying in the Jewish quarter so caught a lot of street art which I love in addition to her suggesting a lot of local shops for food/gifts/everything else. Came back and decided to go out on the town to an open mic night. I was the oldest one there as is per usual when I go out overseas, but I did some karaoke and got nice and drunk.
Day 3: Did an off the beaten path food tour to some of the smaller markets and butcher shops in the city. Was pretty amazing experience again 1 on 1. You had to roll me home by the end of the day I had so much sausage, cake, langos, pancakes...everything I could imagine. Food was ridiculous.
Day 4: Did the Szechenyi baths. Was cold as hell but I did it the "locals" way even when it was 30 degrees and snowing outside. I had a great time and spent more time than you're supposed to there (like 3 hours). Came out and got an amazing dinner at Getto Gulyas in the Jewish quarter. I had Paprikas, Gulyas, beer...think the bill was like $9. I love this city. Went out again at night on a ruin pub crawl where i got nice and sloshed.
Day 5: Was there for Christmas, so took this day to go to a ton of Christmas markets and try to find some actually hungarian actually homemade gifts. Was harder than I thought. Ate some more kolbasz sausages and headed on a communist tour. Fascinating history this city has. Decided to take it easy on this last night and just have some beers and some cheaper food that was still high quality.
All tolled, was the best city I've ever visited in Europe. I head back on Tuesday for 8 days, and then I'll be back on my aforementioned trip in April. I don't think I'll run out of stuff to do or to eat. I can get used to $1.50 beers and $10 gourmet meals.

Not sure if there is anywhere in the world where "my whole ass" is an appropriate toast. But we could start a trend.
