In order to reduce the spam on this board I have had to further lock down the permissions. By approving registrations I snagged four nefarious characters this morning alone. This does not prevent guests from posting spam so I changed permissions so that guests cannot create new threads. Guests can still reply to existing threads. I can change that if it continues to be a problem. I did not want to do this but I really have no choice.

If you have any thoughts or concerns about this please let me know...

So true. I understand the "cast a wide net" strategy with email spam/scams, and those are send by bot to purchased lists. It seems it takes a couple of steps to get on our board--so why bother? I guess overseas they can pay workers a pittance to sign on to a list of forums without knowing what they are.

A woman once described the annoyances as "Ads for products I don't want for parts I don't have."

BTW my work email was once hacked and I was sending 10,000 emails an hour, which caused a big melt-down. Since then I have received lots of solicitations from overseas to buy "clean" and "current" email lists--a peek at how these operate.

What criteria do you use to determine that they're up to no good? I have no doubt your instincts are correct, but how will you know when one is legit? I mean, you can totally tell because at best they look like usernames from a 1995 AOL account, but what if a legit n00b uses a username like that (seems like the type that would be attracted to an old-skool format to me) instead of something obviously jam-band related?

Great question. Still figuring it out. I can click on the IP address in the admin panel and it takes me to stopforumspam.com. Then you see something like this:

The gmail address almost looks legit but this page shows me that they have been reported many times. And they are from Cameroon. Most of the new "registrants" tend to be from India and Pakistan. NTTIAWWT but not many people interested in Lockn from there. If there is a chance that they could be legit I will approve them. If they spam, I will ban them. Will I get it right every time? Probably not. If the email address is like xxx.protonmail.ga then yea you can't come in...
