Reddit and traditional forums like this proboards forum serve two different purposes.
Reddit is still centered around discussion but because of the nature of the front page and how things move quickly it is better served as a news feed. It is a "blink and you'll miss it" thing, kind of like a more fleshed out twitter. With reddit you subscribe to the subjects that interest you and pull up your news feed every day (the front page) and you can digest multiple subjects in one quick sitting. In a 10 minute browsing you can catch up on politics, music, local news, and a variety of your hobbies. While also ignoring the subjects you don't like. I think there is where most people get in to trouble with Reddit, is by not removing a subreddit they hate from their newsfeed (like /r/politics if that kinda stuff bugs you).
Whereas the more traditional forum (like this one) is better suited for really long form discussion, sometimes lasting months if not years, on a single topic. But in order to digest the information you have to purposefully go to each separate forum and its url. It can be cumbersome for somebody that feels like they don't have a lot of time. And pulling up a 55 page post can be daunting when people expect you to have read the entire thing before commenting. But some of the most detailed and informative stuff to be found on the internet is hidden away within traditional forums.
Also, reddit tends to skew younger (25-35) than most traditional forums. So that can definitely get on ones nerves when having to deal with young whipper snappers.
Ultimately each one has their own use and they aren't meant to be 1:1 comparisons.
