Welcome to the Lockn' Forum - The home of the original Lockn' Music Festival family!
well, not a word but a thing that fits: a Slinky. Some people are like slinky's: they serve no purpose but are fun to watch when you push them down the stairs. Over-engineered? Labyrinthine? And by that time you are safely far away! You can have a lot of fun with words that people don't know and often assume the wrong meaning. There are those who get all wound up over someone being discovered to be a philatelist. BTW sycophant is the preferred spelling. Please note: This forum is in no way officially associated with Lockn' Festival or its promoters.

Thanks for sharing that. I did learn a few new terms. By the way I've never had any trouble understanding you but I have family from Southwest VA as well. Bluefield, Pearisburg and Peterstown, West VA to be more specific.

And since we are largely talking big words, I really like sychophant. just means a brown-noser or a yes man, but most people don't know what it means so you can call someone it without anyone knowing what you are saying. at least until they look it up.

ob·se·qui·ous
/əbˈsēkwēəs/
adjective
obedient or attentive to an excessive or servile degree.
"they were served by obsequious waiters"
I first heard it from Steve Martin in "Grandmother's Song"
Be courteous, kind and forgiving
Be gentle and peaceful each day
Be warm and human and grateful
And have a good thing to say
Be thoughtful and trustful and childlike
Be witty and happy and wise
Be honest and love all your neighbors
Be obsequious, purple, and clairvoyant
Be pompous, obese, and eat cactus
Be dull, and boring, and omnipresent
Criticize things you don't know about
Be oblong and have your knees removed
Be tasteless, rude, and offensive
Live in a swamp and be three dimensional
Put a live chicken in your underwear
Get all excited and go to a yawning festival
Be courteous, kind and forgiving
Be gentle and peaceful each day
Be warm and human and grateful
And have a good thing to say
Be thoughtful and trustful and childlike
Be witty and happy and wise
Be honest and love all your neighbors
Be obsequious, purple, and clairvoyant
What happens if I take both?

To leave abruptly. Skedaddle. Depart quickly and secretively. For a frontiersman, to leave camp suddenly and set up elsewhere. Usage is slang or jocular.
What makes this word so cool to me is that in the early 1800's would have been under the "made-up word of the day" thread on this forum. It came from a mock Latinate blend of abscond, squat, and perambulate (walk): get up from a squat and walk away. Other words that have similar origins and history are "bloviate" and "discombobulate".
Those in their 20's would use the term "ghosting" when someone leaves quietly, such as leaving a party or bar without telling anyone goodbye, and they are noticed as missing later.

I lost my buddy Jay in Baltimore one night. We were with a bunch of his friends at yet another bar when we decided to leave. I told Jay we were heading out and then went to look for stragglers. When I came downstairs with the last of our group Jay was not waiting out front with everyone else. No one had seen him so we went back in and searched. No luck. We spent the next hour looking for him. I placed a locally famous phone call at drunk -thirty to our other buddy say "Dude, I lost Jay. What am I going to tell Mo?" I eventually gave up and decided that whatever had befallen him was not in my immediate vicinity and was therefore out of my control. So I went to Mahaffey's Pub and boozed it up till closing. I eventually got back to the hotel and he was asleep in bed. He had headed down the stairs out the door and into a cab all in a single movement. If there had not been a cab with an open door I have no doubt we would have found him in the street. The next day was a challenge but that is another story.

Written reference to the superstitious fear of the number thirteen dates to the late 1800s. Its origin is conjectural (a matter of guesswork). The term triskaidekaphobia first appeared in the early 1900s. It was derived from treiskaideka, the Greek word for thirteen + phobia, fear of = a fear of thirteen.
