antonomasia

In some earlier discussion about the recently late Tom Wolfe I noted how he could describe a feature of a person, such as an article of clothing, and from that we knew the whole person. Then I read the following in an article about his early writing:


"Wolfe soon began experimenting with other innovative devices. One was antonomasia, the usually derisive practice of describing an individual by a certain characteristic, then making it into a proper noun.

"Thus Wolfe depicted the gunman in a botched liquor store robbery as “slightly built and snappy-talking.” Seven paragraphs later: “Turner retreated but now the truck pulled up. Snappytalk opened fire.” "

To this day, 45 years later, I recall the opening of "Acid Test" and the Shiny Black FBI Shoes.

I fudgel like a mofo.

Junkernecking
(n.) A form of rubbernecking used to determine if roadside junk is trash or treasure.

As one who is known to scalvage, this fits well.

It will also apply next Monday as we scan for GROUND SCORES, that favorite term I learned from Brother Sneake!

And the results of my junkernecking, scalvaging and scoring ala ground will the exhibited at my Kasbah campsite this year. Come gaze among my treasures.

 Awesome. I haven's seen a commercial that good in years...of course, I haven't seen any commercial for quite some time, but still. And, yeah, John Bell Weld is the bom.

you chose wisely

Those Offerman commercials are great. He is my spirit animal, even builds canoes. When I was looking for a new grill several years ago I was trying to find an old Weber and restore it, but had no luck. This past year I have seen two on curbs and one guy tossing one at the dump. Took everything I had not to grab them, but I don’t need another project....
