This thread really reads like:

What was the business? Maybe he had to bag items. Since the sentence says "He WAS left literally holding the bag" it implies past tense and that at one point he may actually have been holding the bag. Unless you were with him the entire time from when his partners bailed to the time the example was given, it may be difficult to dispute the fact he was holding the bag.

I will never ever win this one, but 'begging the question' has a specific meaning in philosophy. It refers to a circular argument or a tautology. However, it is used as "that begs the question..." meaning it raises a question that follows logically. Also, you are at someone's beck and call when you have to respond, not their beckon call. I am too old now to get worked up about any of these, but they come into my ears like a needle scratch on a record.
