Streaming Devices Recommendations

No recommendations but let us know how that jailbroken fire stick works out if you get. "Unlimited adult content" leads me to believe you may be taking an indefinate hiatus from here.

We cut the cable about 7 years ago and I have used various Roku devices. I like them a lot, with one caveat. I bought a stick for my weekly work travel and it has issues connecting to hotel WiFi. Therefore I wouldn’t recommend it if used on a WiFi where you have to go through a sign in page. I read amazon fires sticks don’t have these issues and will be getting one **soon**.

I want to cut the cable, but we're in an area (Baltimore City) where Comcast rules supreme.  We'd have to get internet through them, anyway, and I think at $89.99 for internet, our savings would be minimal.  We pay $192 now tho..so maybe that's not true and if we put together Hulu Live TV / Netflix / Internet, we would save.  How have you liked being off the grid?

once you get a season behind, you will never know the difference. I have gotten to where I watch almost exclusively YouTube channels of user create stuff. Mostly boats, maker content, knife making, etc. I pay $90 for fiber from ATT, but the minimum i could pay for internet is $60, so I don't think that can be included in the 'cable' cost since I would have internet regardless. So say I spend a $30 premium since everyone in the house could be streaming at the same time. After that is an a la carte menu. If you have Amazon Prime, you already have a shit ton of content and I don't consider that a cost since I would have that service for the shipping alone. Netflix will run you $15, but I honestly almost never watch them anymore. I have signed up for and dropped Hulu multiple times, not really worth it. We do have HBOGO ($20)which is a luxury for the wife's GOT addiction and can actually be some economy if you watch a lot of movies as renting them can add up. I do recommend Sling if you like sports. You can get ESPN, History Channel, HGTV, Vice, and several others for $25ish I think. So, it can add up if you keep adding services. If you signed up to all the above including your internet charge, you would be at $150, a monthly savings of $40 or ~$500 annually.  Put that annual $500 into an S&P Index Fund for 20 years and buy a new car. Youtube, PBS and several others are free. Lastly buy at $15 over-the-air antenna from amazon and you will get all the local channels in HD for free.

edit: I travel every week and the hotel has cable obviously. I end up taking my Roku stick and watching the same thing I watch at home. I know for a fact that I am not interested in cable anymore.

We've got a new Roku because we so rarely use Cable to watch anything (this is why I want to cut the cord).  We have Amazon Prime, Netflix (split with my mom), and Hulu (split with my mom).  So I think it's time to cut that cord finally.

You guys almost have me ready to take the leap. College football and bowl season are the only sports I watch. PJ does love some HGTV. We already have Amazon Prime and I think we share Netflix with the kids. I may seriously check this out in May or something. I think I need access to FX because the only series I even pretend to watch is Legion. I think.

Yeah...I think Hulu Live is going to be my football package this year. The Big Ten Network plus Fox Sports channels are necessary for Penn State fans these days. I had to go to the brewpub for too many games this year. Not that I mind a few beers and apps...but I'd rather watch at home.

I am currently on a free, 5 day Playstation Vue subscription. FYI, you dont need a Playstation. Signed up yesterday. Tried it out based on this review: www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/we-spent-100-hours-streaming-live-tv-to-help-you-cut_us_59a5cc07e4b0d81379a81be4 since it was voted the best for sports and included everything my wife wants (HGTV, E, Travel). I will probably try most of them out since they offer free trials and then make a final decision. I am running through a chromecast and have to use my phone as the remote which was almost a dealbreaker. Sitting here at work I remembered my TV is a smart tv and I can use the regular remote that came with it which I tucked away when I got Comcast remote. Now I am psyched to go home and try it out (again).

I had a streaming blueray, used my pc; they are all fiddly except for roku. i agree with sue, it makes life real easy. not sure if some of the other competitors are just as easy, but will be finding out on the amazon stick soon given said issues with hotel wifi.

To me, I think they are all pretty close, price wise, for what I am looking for. Whatever has the best remote/guide for ease of use is probably what I will go with. My other thought was just doing the switch between Fios and Comcast every two years so I stay around the $90 total price point. The scam now is you have to pick a named package (i.e. Sports and News, Action and Entertainment, Kids, Lifestyle and Reality). Any one of which may have what i want, may have what my wife want, but none have what both want. Than they nail you with the extra package price.
