Any fans out here? I played and coached for decades until my knees said "no mas," but I still love watching. Italy is my team, leaving me captivated by the games but without any strong rooting interests. (It doesn't help that my second team is Holland, in part for the memory of Johann Cruyff.) I must say that the first round was packed with thrilling games and with fewer displays of cynical, fouling/flopping play. Tomorrow promises a pair of intriguing matchups.

Anyway, I'm not sure if anyone out here is watching the Cup but in my house it certainly counts as the *second* most important event of the summer!

You're likely thinking of the upcoming Phish festival. We're talking association football here.

I was hoping for a Messi and Ronaldo show today, but France and Uruguay certainly deserved to win. And two games down in the knockout round ... and no penalty kick shootouts. That in itself makes for a good day of soccer.
