Staying in Rome

Hey! I really can't give an informed opinion on Trastevere. The only major advice I have would be to make sure you are doing a VRBO rather than a hotel. So much more for your money. We stayed here and it was excellent:

definitely figure out the buses and metro as taxis are a rip off and they drive you all over the place to increase the fare. Be wary of pickpockets on public transport though. Also, we used the lonely planet guide for Italy but it wasn't very good for the details of Rome. The place we stayed in had a Rick Steves book that was excellent with lots of great walking tours and tips for transport, etc. I would imagine he would have neighborhood stay recommendations as well.

If I were to return i would also check out this area as we walked through there and it seemed more residential, but still close to the sights and convenient to public trans

Going back to the former posts, MccJeff and I stayed a couple blocks from each other and both found it to be a good area; lots to do in walking distance, safe, plus reasonable food prices.

With 6 of you, you will want to rent out a couple of rooms on the same floor of the older hotels--most seem like apartments anyway. Rooms are often small and bathrooms ridiculously tiny (our shower "stall" was like standing in an aquarium) and are often shared. OTOH some of the rooms were cavernous! Look for something with some common area, such as a balcony or sitting room.

I believe that's the area just across the creek from the area where Mccjeff and I stayed. My niece was there on the Trastavere side on a study-abroad and my sis/BIL visited and stayed there, both right on the river, and found it convenient. But I'd go back to my side; without the river you have more walking options.
