Welcome to the Lockn' Forum - The home of the original Lockn' Music Festival family!
"...maybe we all Smosey Wales and family tribe (Jane Andy Sara John and half dozen haflings of the next generation) day tripping from myhomeinNorfolkVirgina. I might go both nights, or just Saturday. Anyone wanting local info let me know. The best nearby brew pub (also a distillery and listening room) is The Vanguard, occupying an old Armory, in downtown Hampton, which is not a bad area for walking/biking around. Full menu of decent pub grub. Good craft beer made there; I haven't tried their spirits but I think it's just rum and vodka. I had hoped they'd do a late night but ABC laws make that unworkable. Hooters is the best closest spot for beer and their food is right good. The whole 'Hooter girl" thing is a non-issue. For great waterfront drinking and dining The Deadrise on Fort Monroe at the marina--full bar and menu from sandwiches to seafood dinners, great sunset and Fort Monroe is a really cool place for walking/driving/biking. Go there for your bloodies. The Deadrise - 100 McNair Dr Bldg 207 Above the Marina, Fort Monroe. "Eat dirt cheap" at Fuller's in Phoebus Lots of chain restaurants nearby in the Mall area and "Power Plant" area, both off Mercury Blvd. No different than anywhere else. Please note: This forum is in no way officially associated with Lockn' Festival or its promoters.

Red Roof Inn = Bolos
If you are staying elsewhere you can pick your team...
Here is some context form Bill K. about the Europe '72 tour.
The below is from Bill's book. Where he said he was a Bozo.
"We had two tour busses and we quickly formed psuedo-alliances based on which bus we were on. You were either one of the Bozos or one of the Bolos. I was on the bus where most of the seats faced backwards. That meant I was a Bozo. Most of the band were Bozos. Just a bunch of clowns, really. Our crew clowned around too, but most of them were Bolos. Who knows what their deal was? Or I should say, who knows what their deal really was? Never ask a Bozo about a Bolo. General rule of thumb.
"The entire tour became a continual running joke as we would try to put each other down for either being a Bozo or a Bolo and, like everything, we took it as far as we could. At one of the gigs, we went onstage wearing wigs and clown masks, perhaps to publicly declare ourselves a band of (mostly) Bozos. Or to spread the Bozo message to the world. It was outreach. It was also all just one big gag. For our own amusement, really.
"Part of the whole Zen head trip was that it mattered tremendously which bus you were on but it also didn’t matter one bit because both buses were both things at all times. You were either on one or you were on the other. The Bozo bus and the Bolo bus had one thing in common— European bus drivers with really hard edges to them. They could cut right through traffic as if they were on mopeds, and they were skillfully gnarly on the road, zipping us from country to country. They made for great tour guides, too—they knew all the places to make piss calls and whatever else we needed to stop for. We knew nothing about Europe before this trip and I’m not sure that we really learned much of anything at all during it, either. We were too firmly entrenched in our own Bozo and Bolo culture to take in much of the culture surrounding us."

“What in the hell does all this have to do with Phish?” you ask. Well, in the midst of Colonel Forbin dragging his weary shit ass up the mountain to find Icculus at Darien Lake (8/14/97), he instead ran into Kesey’s wizard, scarecrow, tinman, and Frankenstein who were in search of their missing Bozo friends. In the process they delivered a healthy dose of chaos to the show. How and why the Bozo crew ended up at the Phish show is best described in Part 2 of the Grandfurthur Tour Kronikles. Despite the heroic efforts of all involved, the “Merry Pranksters Jam” (which included segments of “Frankenstein” and a funk groove that ultimately resolved into “Camel Walk”), the short PranksterPhish adaptation of Twister was no less of a musical disaster; once again for being overlong, too loose, and largely uninteresting. The prank certainly did what it was supposed to however, as it managed to stave off the seemingly disastrous conclusion that would befall the Phish world for another seven years.

Of course, "bus" had the iconic meaning at the time, as did "bozo".
Firesign stuff was tossed around the way Monte Python's would be a decade or so later.
I recall back then (1970's) people cutting up the MADD bumper stickers "I Cruise Without Booze" to read "I Cruise With Bozo".
And then there were the bikers, who ironically were tight with the Dead, who called a person who was a biker wannabe or half-stepper a "bozo."
