Welcome to the Lockn' Forum - The home of the original Lockn' Music Festival family!
well, to that point, the reason Dead music makes a fine festival--it's own variety. The variety found in the original songs primarily, and then the way the best songs lend themselves to changed interpretations, and scattered among both types, all the Dead covers that can be changed around. I want the cowboy songs and jazz; someone else wants space/drums and someone else wants Terrapin/WRS. Few bands have a songbook that can scratch so many itches (at the risk of causing irritations at the same time!) Please note: This forum is in no way officially associated with Lockn' Festival or its promoters.
Too Much Dead?

I completely understand how some folks not being really into the Dead could be turned off by this even though you are wrong. I know several people who haven't come back because of too much Dead. I know many others who continue to return for this very reason. The Dead theme goes back to LOCKN 2013 with the four sets of Furthur. How do you get people to come to a farm in Nelson County VA, a place where nobody has heard of in 2013? Get Furthur to play and also tell them Neil Young will be there even though he's not coming. This theme has been a consistent draw for LOCKN since it's inception and I don't see them turning their backs on it. They will ride that wave until it crashes on the beach.
Me, I love it. See you on The Farm...

I go to a lot of Jerry Fests and Dead fests with a lot of cover bands all doing Dead. There is enough material and diversity to make that super fun if I go knowing that’s what I’m in for.
Lockn’s gonna Lockn and I hope that they keep the Deadcentric theme but add all the other flavors of jam music too. the jam band scene got a lot of fuel from the Dead ABB BD and others and where it has ended up today is a beautiful thing to me especially with grass sorta taking the helm. Bands like Strangefolk and moe. As well. I love Umph especially there mash up stuff. At Lockn I love seeing the evolution of this scene grow and the many talents that collaborate in one off shows I don’t care what they play or who the cover. It is a showcase of amazing talent getting to showcase their amazing abilities.

I totally agree with you. Besides SCI, TTB, WSP, UM, TAB & maybe Gov’t Mule who else could you get to headline??? Each of those bands can carry multiple nights on their own & they can all deliver amazing collaboration sets or cover sets. That’s what makes them headliner material. Twiddle, Pigeons, Billy Strings, Spafford, Keller, Lettuce, Bisco, etc... are all great bands but not quite headliners yet. Now some of the bluegrass bands like GSBG or Yonder could probably be a headliner on Thursday or Sunday. The Avett Brothers were a good choice that one year. Lockn has had every band that’s out there pretty much besides STS9 & Lotus that’s a Jamband. Dave Matthews or The Lumineers would be fit in ok too but they aren’t necessarily jambands. They could have a classic rock headliner every year but those guys are harder to find every year. There’s Neil Young, Jimmy Buffett, McCartney, Roger Waters, Bob Seger, Dylan, Mellencamp, Paul Simon, maybe David Byrne, Fleetwood Mac or the Stones. But alotta those bands don’t tour frequently enough or can get their own paydays w/o festivals. Lockn’s best bet is to stay the premier eastern Dead related festival with the usual suspects back every year or every other year in the supporting headliner roles. I like knowing what I’m gonna see before I buy my ticket.

And at some point Spafford, Strings, Goose, etc.. will be the ones we are complaining are always at the top of the bill, and I cant wait for that!

As someone commented, Phish plays music and the Dead plays songs. While we don't want to devolve to a greatest hits singalong like a Buffet concert--though it might sell more tickets--familiarity makes for a good time.
