I get what people are saying about same headliners getting old but I like TTB, UM, SCI, WSMFP every year at all the festivals. And honestly, if they lose them, they are in big trouble. I mean short of Phish, they are the biggest jam bands on the circuit. If they go to Twiddle, PPPP, ***insert second tier band name here*** as headliners, they are done. Sneaking in a big name classic rock or collab breaks it up a bit, but you need those bands.
I whole heartedly agree that MMJ was an all time Lockn Highlight & they should welcome them back. Isabel was good, I put him on the same level as the Revivalist. I think Nathaniel Ratliff, Chris Stapleton, Sturgil Simpson & the Lumineers could fill that slot too. But WILCO, I’m not on board with. I respect Tweedy & Cline but their Set is when you go back to the tent & rest up for the good shit. In ‘14 when they started there was a mass exodus from the field and people were pouring back into the field the minute their set was over. Gary Clark is legit, but much like Billy Strings while headliners musically I don’t think they sell headliner level tickets. I would imagine it’s kinda hard to book the more mainstream bands, DMB, Tool, Buffett, Fleetwood Mac, etc b/c I bet those guys aren’t super excited to go on after A Dead band that just sent the crowd into a frenzy or much less after SCI, TTB or WSP cause those bands are so good musically. I know if I was a guitar player I wouldn’t want follow Derek Trucks. And I feel Bands like SCI & UM are super tight. SCI music is very complex with multple layers & a lot of structure. It’s not nearly improvised as much as UM. For me the jams are the lyrics, like in “Little Hands”, there’s words but the song is Billy & Kang pickin, then Kyle on a classical piano, then the explosion of Kang on Violin dueling with Kyle. SCI has dueling solos, most other bands have one guy at a time going ham, or somebody up there noodling for a few minutes. I hope Lockn gets more diverse but I want them to go away from the radio & embrace jam bands that are super popular but haven’t made it too Lockn yet. They should get Jamtronica acts like STS9, Shpongle Live Band, Lotus, Papadosio, Goose, Dizgo, etc... maybe even Dave Tipper with Android Jones Visuals on a screen. I think that will expand the tent and bring in new bands, new styles & new visions. More acts like them, more Bluegrass, more white boy reggae & maybe even some real reggae, more international style music. Take that with the current usual suspects, the Dead acts, the local bands, the classic rock acts along with the tribute sets & collaborations is what Lockn needs to stick with.
