Nelson County has a very developed tourist industry--but the good thing is that it is not touristy. Blue Mountain has a brewery and scenic restaurant near Afton; Virginia Distillery makes this country's best "Scotch" whisky and it's about 6 miles from The Farm. All are easy to find. Lots more wineries/breweries/distilleries. Roads are not real good for bicycling unless you are adventurous. Great history in Lexington including at W&L (what's left) and VMI. My wife and I will be arriving a few days early before the fest. Any cool things to do in the area that anyone would recommend? Cool historical sites or can't miss hikes? Also, maybe a good restaurant I take my wife out to one night before the fest starts? So darn excited for this fest, my wife and I are already planning out all the days for our week trip. Thanks in advance for the help!

Hikes: Crabtree Falls, Spy Rock, The Priest
Historical site: Appomattox Civil War surrender grounds
Restaurant: Lynchburg The William Henry Steakhouse
Lots of other restaurants in Charlottesville and Lynchburg as well as many more historical sites in the area.

Be very careful on this hike and obey the warning signs about getting TOO close to the falls. Over 30 people have died there over the years on this hike by disobeying the warnings. Stay on the trail and you are fine.

Drive the Blue Ridge Parkway. Drive Rt 56 (which passes Crabtree Falls) over the parkway and toward Lexington. Drive back on Rt 60. Great hikes all along there including Mine Bank Creek down to the falls on St. Mary's near Vesuvius.
James River canoeing is slow in Nelson County but picks up upriver. Not sure what the river levels will be like in June. There are outfitters everywhere.
There are dozens of posts here about the area and what to see, usually starting a few weeks before each festival. Some info depends on which direction you are coming from, and if you are dragging an RV, camping, hoteling, etc. But once you are at the festival, you won't want to leave.
Warning: you can't bring ANY glass into the festival, so make arrangements to stash your souvenirs!

Thanks for ALL the info! Don't plan on leaving the fest, but we are arriving on Monday night if all pans out, so wanted to do a few other things on Tuesday and Wednesday.

My wife and I are deciding between Crabtree Falls and Shenandoah National Park before the fest. Any huge difference? Which one is more desirable? Looking for nice hiking, not too difficult. Shenandoah seems to have a pretty nice drive, but kinda far from where we are staying in Lovingston on Tues/Wed. Any more thoughts are appreciated.
*Mainly, is it worth the hourish extra drive back and forth?

Crabtree Falls, hands down, for proximity and scenery but please heed the warning about the falls. Many deaths (in the thirties) from hikers not heeding the signs and going out on the falls for a better view. For your situation I believe you made the right choice, even though I am a little biased.
Be careful, I know we keep saying it but it has to. When you get there you'll understand, it all looks fairly unassuming and that is the issue.
