Welcome to the Lockn' Forum - The home of the original Lockn' Music Festival family!
Well that and DSO shows there is no "cover band black-out". Some would add JRAD; some will argue they don't "cover". soso Please note: This forum is in no way officially associated with Lockn' Festival or its promoters.
**This is The OFFICIAL LOCKN 2020 Lineup Thread**

I've known my fiance since 7th grade. We didn't date, we weren't especially good friends, but we have those common roots that branched off when we graduated from high school. When we reconnected a few years ago, he started teaching me, and now I tell people (truthfully) if someone had introduced me to the Dead as a teenager, my life would have been very different.
So for me, yes, this Lockn is about hearing Phil, since I never got to see the Dead live. But it's also about hearing everything else - where the music came from, where it's going. Keeping my mind and my ears open.

My parents were born in ‘46 & ‘55 and are from the hills of eastern Kentucky. I grew up going to family members houses who didn’t have plumbing and had a single lightbulb in the living room for electric and dirt floors. So I’m about as un millennial as they come. Lol. I was raise by grandma cause my Dad was a firefighter. In the 80’s I grew up setting in front of an old console stereo or victrola in the gargage snapping beans w/ grandma listening to records by the Carter Family, Roy Acuff, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis and Patsy Cline. That started my love of music. My dad loves the Allman Brothers & used to know the guys from Marshall Tucker really well when he lived in S.C. So I’ve always been into that, my dad is a huge The Band fan too, been hearing the Last Waltz for ever too. I was a Nirvana, Pearl Jam kid til I found the dead on cassette tapes & Skeltons in your Closet and the early Dicks Picks. Then as a teenagers& young adult I got into & out of Phish, back into bluegrass & folk and fell in love with String Cheese. I’m a music junkie & Lockn is one my favorite places ever. It’s the Hornings Hideout or Suwannee of the east. It’s a great venue with great music. It’s always good. I think it appeals to all generations that love good music. As someone whose only seen Woodstock on film, Lockn is the closet I’ve ever felt to that vibe. It’s a mega festival of jam bands. It appeals to all my musical taste & I’m glad Pete throws us a party like Lockn every year.

Lessee...first: yes, congrats all on more or less civilized behavior. Social media is a frikkin cesspool, and I for one want no more truck with it. chinatownshuffle better run his opinions past the OG mods of this forum before mentioning it in the same breath as reddit, though. My understanding is that this forum was created as an old-skool alternative (and subtle middle finger) to reddit and Facebook. Anyways, while I may not be the biggest a-hole on here, but I'm pretty sure I make the top five, so yeah. Things could be worse.
I'm happy as a clam with this lineup. Ever since 2015 I've been rah-rah "stuff you can't see elsewhere," so this is (almost) a dream come true. Sneake , Sue wants me to help talk you into it, but I have neither the time nor the energy to spell out why you should give Phil a chance this time. Besides, China already kinda did it for me. Couldna said it better my own self. I dunno how much stock you put in the other Nick's endorsement though, so take it from this one: what China said.
Except the reddit thing. Younguns. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Speakin' o' which - GenX and fiercely proud of it. It's great to appreciate both the sprawling, bombastic Summer of Love music and its subsequent backlash. 'Specially when bands like Umph mash them up or play jammed out alt/punk tunes. We didn't give the world Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Back To The Future, Breakfast Club, Schoolhouse Rock, Sesame Street or Mister Rogers, but you can build all the widget factories you want - if there's no one to buy your widgets, it'll still fail. I dunno about you, but I watched in dismay as my parents Woodstock Generation turned into the Me Generation. Raised by TV, because they were too self-absorbed to bother. Latch-key kids, indeed. Children of the divorce boom - D-I-V-O-R-C-E and Midnight Blue. Oh well, at least the Cold War ended (the Berlin Wall came down the year I graduated high school), and they've hardly bothered us since then.
I'm so damn glad this isn't Peach. Don't get me wrong - it's an amazing lineup, but very similar to what you'll see at every big fest this year. I'm already seeing an Oysterhead headlined fest elsewhere, and I'm pretty sure the summer undercards will be a rotating cast of the Everyone who's at Peach, so I'm satisfied that I don't have to muck around with eviL Nation. To whoever said VIP at Peach was cheaper than Lockn, have you been to Peach before? The initial ticket price is low, but they nickel and dime you every time you turn around. I've never saved on anything by going to Peach over Lockn except gas. And the terrain...oy! Have fun at the water park - to me, it's the only part that's worth it. And it means taking my shirt off, which NO one wants.
Welp, that about wraps it up for now. I'll be standing by for TOO's redactions/scolding, and the obligatory "off-topic" animojis.

I could handle them getting moved to the Forest stage one night for a late night throw down. They’d tear that mother down!!!! Those dudes can sing, play & Shred. I mean Horne’s with CATS in the forest, Mapache too, that’s all the Grateful Shred dude’s. Why not Grateful Shred one night too. It would be so good. Check them on YouTube & the archive, dude’s are legit.

Anyway, to bring it back to the topic; I will say to anyone on the fence or not thrilled with the line up: last year was the first year I missed because I was disappointed with the line up. I streamed the whole fest, as soon as the music started I thought to myself "why am I on my couch right now". By the time TTB/Trey started I was deep into kicking myself. In 2016 I wasnt thrilled with the line up either and was on the fence until two weeks before. As soon as I got there I forgot every single complaint. Its easy to forget the magic of lockn when your just looking at the line up. If your priorities take you elsewhere great, but we all know the magic of Lockn is more than just the names listed on the card.
And back to the Q, Listen to some Q shows before dismissing this as "yet another PLF line up". If you like The Grateful Dead, Warren Haynes, or Jimmy Herring you'll enjoy the Q. Its not just another "hey check out Phil playing bass while these other guys play instruments next to him". Ive been begging for the Q for years for a reason.

I didn’t say Grahame would sit in with Phil/JRAD/Mayer, I said Phil would sit in with Midnight North (Grahame’s Band). I don’t think Grahame will play with the varsity that night but I bet Phil sits with him Sunday for noon set.

Didn't say you did. That's why I quoted smosey and not both of you. I've seen the family band on more than one occasion and did not enjoy, is all.
Well, we've sure come full circle, if folks allegedly using their real names are now worse trolls than those with screen names to "hide behind." Guess that plan didn't pan out.
Yeah, I forgot to mention in my plea to Sneake : all your friends are doing it! puf's back in, China's back in, I'm back in, Rj's back in, and it'll be Sue's triumphant return to the Farm! You seriously gonna miss all that? If you think it ain't worth the money, you know you can finagle a ticket somehow.
--
Speaking of family reunions, festivals are equal parts concert, party and family reunion. Even if you've never been to one or this one before, you'll reunite with family you didn't know you had*. I have been as guilty as anyone else of both wanting people to shut up and running my mouth. We all gotta try to go with the flow. Get along or get along. Personally, I'm always gonna hang back due to physical disability and a mild distaste for people who aren't me. Of all the things I've ever gotten upset over, I don't think I've ever given anyone on this forum any serious grief over it. I did tell a couple of college-aged dudebros to take it anywhere else in 2016, but that was pretty low on my list of offenses that year. You wanna move closer to hear better? Great, I'll see you when you get back. If you can't or won't, I'll do my best to accommodate if it's reasonable and you ask respectfully. But please no shaming, shushing or snark. I don't even think Bobby himself has the right to shush people, and from what I know of Garcia the person, it's the kind of thing that would piss him off.
Just don't set off that firecracker during Stella, k?

I was thinking the exact opposite. I thought that since they had that Saturday off that it was good possibility that the “TBA” was both James Taylor & Jackson Browne. They don’t have many Saturdays off on that tour except out west. Saturday is big payday for them, their crowd is older professionals & retirees, that crowd don’t rage it weeknights. They have a show w/ Brandi Carlile on that tour too. And since they are upstate NY that’s not very long haul at all for them. They could do that load out & load in. JRAD is doing the same thing for Sunday, coming from NY.

I wouldn’t say it turns me off, it’s just clearly so much better. It makes the whole experience better.

All good, brother. I'm just starting to chafe a bit at all the dunking on Phil's voice. I wanna remind people that he is elderly, he at least used to have perfect pitch, and with a little research I could produce several examples of veritable croaking from Jerry. Or a couple of versions of Attics that were not from FTW but sound like the opening lines from that performace for the whole song.
Box, forinstance, has never sounded good. Not even in 1971. It's just too darn hard to play AND sing. Bobby hates playing it, and it's the only Dead tune that I say gimme the studio version every time.
Phil's ambition just supercedes his ability, and maybe even the physically possible. Overall, I think that's a good thing.
