Accommodations other than camping
Post by kfest10 on Jan 19, 2020 16:43:19 GMT -5
This will be my first time at Lockn' but consider myself a veteran fester'. I have been to Peach, Mt. Jam, NO Jazz fest and many more a number of times.
However, my impression is that this is really out in the middle of nowhere and the best scenario is camping, but, these old bones can't do " camping" anymore
so we are trying to figure out best accommodations. All the hotels with shuttle are about 40-60minutes away.
It that with or without traffic? Anything closer? Any Airbnb communities nearby?....the closest town I have found is Lovingston and Wintergreen, but we really
don't want to drive every day. Any insights would be great!
Looking forward to June!
thanks again,

The hotels with shuttles are about 40 -60 minutes (Lynchburg about 45, not sure about Charlottesville) but there is very little traffic to worry about between LOCKN and either of those cities. If you find an AirBNB near Lovingston you can easily find a cab for relatively cheap to take you to and from LOCKN. I can give you a phone number to call for this. There are some really nice places at Wintergreen but a cab to and from each day may not be as feasible. LOCKN has onsite RV rentals but they are not cheap. Try this site for local RV rentals but act fast they won't last long, especially once the lineup drops early next week. Personally staying onsite is an integral part of the LOCKN experience but may not work for you. I'm sure some others will chime in with helpful advice. Make sure to stay tuned here for information about our meet & greets.
Hang around and join the conversation but whatever you do, PLEASE DO NOT FEED THE ANIMALS...

Driving back and forth from Wintergreen seems like a hassle, but I do know of folks that have done it.
There's a little convenience store that we always stop in a few miles north of Lovingston (because their biscuit sandwiches are DELICIOUS), and there's typically a sign in there with a number to call for rides. I've snapped a picture of it before, just in case, but never ran across anyone at the fest that needed it.
I'm not sure where "Arrington" came from, really. I used to go to events at Oak Ridge Estates (where they have Lockn') long before it was a festival site, and we always knew the place as Lovingston. There is a small hotel there with something like 8 or 12 rooms. I'm sure it's all booked by now, but I'm afraid it's the only place "in town".

I think Wintergreen has shuttles but I don't know if to use them, you have to book lodging through them. But that's the best option, although pricey, for hotel/condo accommodations with transportation.
I don't know your bone situation but a cot with a pad solves a lot of problems and glamping has real mattresses on beds. Staying on site is important IMO.

Last ride back is usually 30 minutes after last performance. In 18 when Lettuce played the Relix stage with Mayer and Krasno, the shuttle waited until after they were done, and that was way later than expected.
But last year, we had to leave Soulive in the forest early to catch the last shuttle out. Still caught a good bit, though.
Shuttle cost has been $160, but that was for 4 days. Would expect the price to remain the same.

If you're looking for someplace cheap and a little bit closer, check out Knights Inn in Madison Heights. We stayed there in 2016 when we ended up leaving at midnight on Thursday (long story, but it involved nitrous dealers) and needed a place to stay. It's not fancy at all, but if all you need is a bed and bathroom, it fits the bill. I would totally stay there again, but my husband is a little pickier than me. Last I looked, they had openings for Lockn weekend, but I'm not sure if the line-up announcement has caused an increase in reservations.
