Off topic bike thread

Spelled chamois; pronounced shammy. At least here in the States. Anything, I guess, can rub a person the wrong way, and there's a product just for that situation: Chamois Butter.

I used to road bike a lot and still have, and rode until recently, the Peugeot 10 speed I bought with paper route money about 50 years ago. Plan to get back on it some day.

I tried to post a pic, but it does not seem to work today...

I used to have a Nishiki in HS. The frame might still be in mom's basement. Need to take a look. I used to be able to break it down to the frame, repack the wheel bearings, and reassemble. I also upgraded the derailleur. A skill I've lost for sure.

I just got into cycling last summer. Started by finding deals on Craigslist, because new bikes are so expensive these days and I wasn't even sure if I was going to get into it. I went through several bikes before I found one that I really liked, did repairs on several that were given away or sold. The one I liked (a 2001 Trek 8000) was fitted as a commuter and started riding to work (about 10 miles each way) every day that it wasn't raining.

During all of that, buying bikes that ended up needed adjustments and repairs, I found that I also really like working on bikes, too. So I got to buying old non-functional bikes and basically rebuilding them.

This is my latest project bike. It's a rare "ZX" from from the mid 1990's which I bought just because I liked the color so much. The only good parts are the frame and wheels. This one is interesting working on, because the suspension fork is completely frozen and I've had to disassemble that and rebuild it. The grease inside was hardened so bad I've had to scrape it off the insides with a file. I also discovered that elastomers are expensive!

Might need to spin this off into a cycling thread. Maybe a sailing one too.

thelizard , I wish I had known you were in the market. I just gave away an '02 Trek 7000.

Here's my baby. 2003 Raleigh M80. Sue won't tolerate any more broken bones from me, so I don't ride off-road anymore. I swapped in some hybrid tires, put on the fenders and turned into a commuter. I had a pair of slicks, but I didn't like the way they cornered. 

Oh, if you don't have the right kind of seat, there's balls a-plenty.

I usually refer to them as exercise sports. Maybe sailing doesn't apply, but I understand it's a bit of a workout.

Dang! I sure do have a lot of bike pics. Maybe we do need a different thread. It could be as long as the "listening" thread. We could call it "what bike are you working on today?"
