dazed and confused was the "into the night" genre movie of my (our) teen days just as American Graffiti was for the 60's. I suppose "Rebel without a cause" was for the fifties. "Friday night lights" for the 90's? I quit paying attention by then.

And FTR before it was a "2 CD soundtrack" it was a Led Zeppelin song that predated CD's--and probably cassettes.

No, you missed my point. D&C was released in 1993 but it was about 1976. AG was released in 1973 but it was about 1962. Retrospective films have a time gap; they don't work if they are contemporaneous. The Deer Hunter was released in 1978 but it was about the late 60's--but it was not an "into the night" movie.  "Risky Business" OTOH was contemporary (1983) and "into the night" generally.  But it didn't draw as much of the nostalgic vibe, except for the Chivas and Coke which we all know--and know better.

consider also Donnie Darko from 2001 set in 1988.

Since we started a whole thread on it, I don't mind rambling. I was excited to re-watch D&C because I had fond memories of it. It just didn't hold up as a good movie. McConaughey's performance held up, but the rest were just a series of vignette's largely based around beating 8th graders with paddles or getting them high/drunk. I remember liking the stoner character back in the day, but he seemed less funny to me now. It made me wonder why I liked it then. A lot of the plot was about the quarter back not signing a commitment to staying drug free. So, I think it was refreshing to see a film portray pot as harmless and righteous man(!). I agree with Smosey, it reminded me of American Graffiti, but not as good.

We also watched Rushmore on friday. Not only did it hold up, but was still excellent by any standard.

Sixteen Candles comes to mind.

I have a feeling that one and Weird Science are going to be John Hughes movies that end up being dust binned.

A lot of his movies have some parts that are touchy, but those two have more of that than the others.

Which is a shame.
