It's an interesting "article" and the first person answering seems to have some insight, but no way to know if he does. The rest is mostly anecdotal so not much value, and some missing insight: for example, "Goose has a fancy tour bus" doesn't mean they bought a $300,000 rig; they rent it and save on transportation and lodging. Unlike Dave Mathews Band, where each band member has his own bus plus an extra set up as a gym! Of course they are tier 1.
Contract terms, manager/promoter cuts, paying back advances*, all these are non apparent factors. Also think about the size of the band: pay $50,000 to have TTB come to down and it gets spread pretty thin by the time it gets to the chorus. A great manager of a band from its beginning can make a big difference.
Some venues give the band the gate and keep the beer money. Others, where concessions don't drive the take, would do it differently. Then I'm sure it gets more complicated with a hotel show (Hard Rock, Caribbean, etc.)

*Van Morrison never made, and still doesn't make, a cent from "Brown Eyed Girl" as all the proceeds were signed over to his manager/producer--who also invested a lot in him for a few years with little return. Van is not bitter about it; it was a deal that got things done.

. Pigeons are fun and all but theyre not a headliner. I wouldn't call the Revivalists a headliner either. I'm not a huge Goose fan but I get it, theyre blowing up and I'm sure they'll throw down. Billy Strings will be awesome. I'm looking forward to seeing the Black Crowes but that also has "mailed in nostalgic Sunday set" written all over it.
